Former Strikeforce 145lbs champion Gina Carano (7-1-0) has been forced to withdraw from her scheduled appearance June 18 vs. Sarah D'Alelio (4-1-0) as Strikeforce executive director, Scott Coker broke the news earlier today that Carano failed her pre-fight medical examination.
“I know that that she’s really disappointed... It’s an unfortunate situation, but we have no further information at this time,” said Coker.
Carano's last bout was her one and only loss at the hands of current champion, Cristine "Cyborg" Santos, which took place August 15, 2009. The cause of concern behind Carano's medical examination has not yet been disclosed, and at present D’Alelio is left without an opponent.
Strikeforce - Overeem vs. Werdum will feature the other two quarterfinals yet to be contested for the Strikeforce Heavyweight Grand Prix, where promotion champion Alistair Overeem will square off with the red hot Fabricio Werdum; and Brett Rogers will have his hands full with UFC and PRIDE veteran Josh Barnett. Antonio Silva and Sergei Kharitonov await the winners, already through to the semi-finals themselves.
