MMA Combat - Bellator 46 - Results

Saturday, June 25, 2011, Bellator Fighting Championships went live from the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Hollywood, Florida. The event featured the quarterfinal pairings for the Bellator Summer Series Featherweight Tournament, and the main-event saw 2010 lightweight tournament champion and one-time 155lbs title challenger Pat Curran (14-4-0) square off with Luis Palomino (16-7-0).

The action got off to a slow start early in the first with both fighters fancying themselves counter-strikers, looking to find their range and timing; at the mid-way point of the round, Curran found his mark with a beautiful combination that sent Palomino reeling to the cage. After Curran threw a flying knee, Palomino was able to score a brief takedown but Curran utilized his smooth grappling ability to create a scramble, allowing him to reverse position, and secure a Peruvian necktie prompting the tap at 3:49 of the first round.

In the co-main event Marlon Sandro (18-2-0) took a split decision from fellow Brazilian Genair da Silva (10-4-0) in a bout that lacked the 'edge of your seat' kinda action usually associated with Sandro bouts; in the first, Sandro hurt da Silva badly with a crisp hook, but da Silva was reluctant to engage after surviving the scary moment, back-pedaling for most of the second and third rounds while noticeably uncomfortable in the pocket in comparison to his seasoned opponent. Oddly enough, one ringside judge scored the fight 29-28 in da Silva's favor despite very little noteworthy offense; fortunately the other two scored it for Sandro putting him through to the semi-finals along with Pat Curran, Nazareno Malegarie, and Ronnie Mann.
