MMA Combat - Title Fights Added to Dream 17, Tavares Replaces Miller at UFC 132

Dream LHW Champ, Gegard Mousasi
MMA Combat - Title Fights Added to Dream 17, Tavares Replaces Miller at UFC 132

The fight card for Dream 17 has recently been bolstered by the addition of two title fights promotion officials announced on Monday, May 30. Dream 17 is set to take place July 16, at the Ariake Coliseum in Tokyo, Japan, and will also feature the finals of the Dream Bantamweight Tournament.

Light heavyweight title holder Gegard Mousasi (30-3-2) will take on 2004 Olympic Games Judo silver medalist Hiroshi Izumi (4-1-0) as "The Dreamcatcher" looks to bounce back from a disappointing yet controversial draw with UFC veteran Keith Jardine in April of this year. Mousasi is a perfect 7-0 under the Dream banner while Izumi is a winner in four-straight appearances under both the K-1 and Sengoku RC promotions.

As well, featherweight titleholder Hiroyuki Takaya (15-9-1) will square off with wrestling ace, Kazuyuki Miyata (11-7-0) who has found his stride of late winning 6 consecutive bouts including his most recent against UFC veteran Caol Uno. Takaya last appeared April 9, 2011, at Strikeforce - Diaz vs. Daley where he dropped a split decision to Robert Peralta.

Also in the news, TUF alumnus and Season 11 semifinalist, Brad Tavares (7-0-0) will replace Jason Miller at UFC 132 - Cruz vs. Faber II this July 2, at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, where he'll take on Aaron Simpson (9-2-0). Perfect to start his professional career, Tavares has only been to the judges cards once thus far in seven outings, while stopping five of his opponents inside the first round.

Simpson, who also posted seven-consecutive wins to begin his career, will now look to make it two straight after coming off a one-sided victory against Mario Miranda this past March 26, at UFC - Fight Night 24. Jason Miller recently signed-on to coach opposite Michael Bisping on the next season of The Ultimate Fighter (14) after Chael Sonnen was handed down a 12 month suspension by the California State Athletic Commission for a positive doping test following UFC 117 where he contested the promotion's 185lbs title.

MMA Combat - Silva Gives Thoughts on Okami, Sonnen Partnership

MMA Combat - Silva Gives Thoughts on Okami, Sonnen Partnership

In a recent interview with O Globo, a Brazilian news publication, UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva (28-4-0) gave his thoughts on the training partnership between number one contender Yushin Okami (26-5-0) and former 185lbs title challenger Chael Sonnen. The Brazilian was critical of the Japanese stand-out for aligning himself with the Team Quest representative, a relationship that was established prior to the recent convictions that have shamed Sonnen's public profile.

“You have to find the best people to train with, and I think [Okami] chose wrong,”
Silva said. “I’d never align myself with a loser, a loser in every sense. He didn’t win the fight [between us] and got caught doping. You want to be a champion? Get with good people, with winners. Moreover, Sonnen wasn’t a tough opponent for me. I was injured with cracked ribs and fought five rounds. If I hadn’t been injured, the fight would have been different.”

The reigning UFC champion will defend his promotion title against Okami on August 27, 2011 at the HSBC Arena in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Okami represents a rare opportunity for the Team Nogueira fighter; a chance to avenge a previous defeat - the most recent on his record - which dates back to January of 2006, over half a decade ago when "The Spider" was disqualified for hitting Okami with an illegal up-kick, one that would render him unable to continue resulting in the loss.

For Okami, the contest provides him with a stage to prove the doubters wrong. The Judoka out of Kanagawa, Japan who now utilizes a more greco-roman wrestling style, has ran through the majority of the 185lbs division on the back of superior strength and grappling technique. Since their last encounter, Okami has posted a 12-3-0 record, including three consecutive victories over Linhares, Munoz, and Marquardt respectively. His only losses came at the hands of Jake Shields, Chael Sonnen, and Rich Franklin (a bout that he arguably won); the Team Quest alignment makes sense for the perennial top-ten, as out-wrestling the champion is likely to be his only path to victory, and despite their recent troubles, the pedigree in the discipline is everywhere you look at the Portland, Oregon camp.

Be sure to tune-in on PPV or UFC.tv, August 27, 2011, to witness this highly anticipated rematch.

MMA Combat - White Retracts Recent Criticism of Mir

MMA Combat - White Retracts Recent Criticism of Mir

After the dust settled and another successful Vegas event was in the books, UFC president Dana White took some time to reflect on Saturday night's show and particularly the performance of former heavyweight champion, Frank Mir.

White was critical when speaking to the media about the UFC 130 co-main event, in short, concluding that he was frustrated Mir didn't perform up-to-par; however, on Sunday morning White took some time to talk with mmajunkie.com where he recanted some of those remarks:

"I think I was a little harsh on Mir," White admitted. "He came into that fight with the perfect gameplan, and he nailed Roy with some big shots. Mir dominated that fight from start to finish, and he deserves some credit for that."

Mir (15-5-0), with the win over Nelson Saturday has now posted consecutive victories for the first time since 2008. When he'll appear next and against who is anyone's guess, as the heavyweight division has been a bit of a juggling act of late; with Velasquez recovering from injury, while awaiting the winner of dos Santos vs. Carwin at UFC 131, and Lesner coming out of another surgery, the top of the division is tied up for the time being.

Match-ups against a blossoming Brendan Schaub (should he get through Nogueira first), or Travis Browne would prove solid tests as both men possess great power in their hands, but if this past weekend showed us anything it's that Mir is capable of, and willing to re-invent himself for success. He has, and will hover around the top of the division for some time to come, which is why White expects more from him, simply because he holds him in high-regard.

"Frank Mir has been a two-time world champion," White said on Saturday. "He's been around a long time. He's a super-talented guy. I expect more of him."

MMA Combat - Emelianenko vs. Henderson Confirmed, Will be Contested at Heavyweight

MMA Combat - Emelianenko vs. Henderson Confirmed, Will be Contested at Heavyweight

After suffering a second loss in a row Fedor Emelianenko hinted in a post fight interview that retirement might be waiting for him sometime in the not too distant future. We now know that this is not the case, as MMA's worst-kept secret is now out of the bag: former number-one heavyweight Fedor Emelianenko will fight current Strikeforce light heavyweight champion Dan Henderson July 30 in Hoffman Estates, Illinois.

Despite some initial reports that the fight would be contested at a catch-weight, we now know that the combatants will have the full range of the heavyweight division's 265-pound weight-limit at their disposal. The confusion was created when Scott Coker made the official announcement on Saturday that the two MMA legends would in fact be fighting in July and that the fight would take place at a 220 pound limit. Moments later, however, the official press release detailed a heavyweight contest.

Henderson immediately cleared things up when he took to his official Twitter account, declaring "the fight is at heavyweight".

The hard hitting Russian, though gracious in defeat, will be eager to get back in the cage and score a much needed victory. While Fedor is widely regarded as one of the best fighters of all time, Henderson is no slouch. Although a wrestler at heart, Henderson's famous 'H-Bomb' is a deal breaker when it lands – just ask Rafael Cavalcante, Renato Sobral, Michael Bisping, and Wanderlei Silva.

This fight may be the best main event in the history of Strikeforce, and with Zuffa's recent acquisition of the promotion many are of the opinion that Strikeforce may not be around for very much longer. But hey, there's no better way to go out than with a bang!

May 29, 2011, the Saitama Super Arena, in Saitama, Japan hosted Dream 17 - Fight for Japan. The event featured the promotion's Bantamweight Tournament Quarterfinal and Semifinal match-ups, as well as a highly publicized appearance for Shinya Aoki who's opponent for the evening was uncertain until a mere 10 days ago when UFC veteran Rich Clementi took the fight on short notice.

Reports from the event, which did not air live in Japan or the United States, speak of Aoki (28-5-0) utilizing his superior grappling ability, achieving a back-mount on his opponent for nearly the duration of the first round, while peppering Clementi (40-20-1) with shots. "No Love" survived the first frame but experienced much of the same in the second when Aoki took his back once more; softening the American with blows, the Dream lightweight ace stopped Clementi at 2:32 of the second round via neck-crank.

In tournament action, Masakazu Imanari (23-8-2) and Hideo Tokoro (29-23-1) saw their way through to Bantamweight Grand Prix Finals defeating Kenji Osawa and Atsushi Yamamoto respectively in the semifinals.

MMA Combat - Rampage Victorious, UFC 130 Results

MMA Combat - Rampage Victorious, UFC 130 Results

Saturday, May 28, The Ultimate Fighting Championship went live from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada for UFC 130 - Jackson vs. Hamill. The main-event featured a light heavyweight bout with plenty on the line as Quinton "Rampage" Jackson took on Matt "The Hammer" Hamill in what was 15 minutes dictated by the strength and takedown defense of the former 205lbs champion of the world.

Hamill (10-3-0) did a decent job early evading Jackson's hands, but as the contest wore on and desperate outside shots turned up empty, Jackson (32-8-0) started to find his mark with crisp combinations and thudding knees while breaking from the clinch. Dana White suggested that "Rampage" with a win, would be next in-line for a title shot against LHW kingpin Jon Jones; but without a convincing performance here tonight - albeit a clean sweep on the cards - many questions have already been asked regarding the pending match-up.

“Matt Hamill is tough, man,” said Jackson. “I tried to knock him out. I came into this fight with a fractured hand, and I apologize for not fighting the type of fight I wanted to. I tried to knock him out.”

The evening's co-main event saw Frank Mir (15-5-0) outlast Roy Nelson (15-6-0) in what was to become a war of attrition. The former UFC heavyweight champ utilized his strength and reach advantage early, attacking with more dynamic striking patterns, while mixing in takedown attempts that caught a fatiguing Nelson off-guard. Nelson was resiliant when put into some difficult spots, returning to his feet time and time again, but Mir's strength, cardio, and ability to finish the takedown was all the difference in this one as he remains relevant at the top of the heavyweight division with a unanimous decision win.

Keeping in-line with the comradery these guys showed at weigh-ins, Mir was all praise when talking about the fight and his opponent:

“I pushed hard against a tough guy,” he said. “How many times did I hit him in the face? My God, what’s in that guy’s chin?”

Other results can be found below:

1 Renan do Nascimento Mota Pegado def. Cole Escovedo via Decision (Unanimous) rd3 5:00
2 Michael McDonald def. Chris Cariaso via Decision (Split) rd3 5:00
3 Gleison Tibau def. Rafaello Oliveira via Submission (Rear-Naked Choke) rd2 3:28
4 Tim Boetsch def. Kendall Grove via Decision (Unanimous) rd3 5:00
5 Demetrious Johnson def. Miguel Torres via Decision (Unanimous) rd3 5:00

MMA Combat - UFC Live 4, Main-Card Finalized

Nate Marquardt will make his welterweight debut
MMA Combat - UFC Live 4, Main-Card Finalized

The UFC has finalized its four-fight main card for UFC Live 4 - Marquardt vs. Johnson on Versus. The event is scheduled to take place June 26, 2011, at the Consol Energy Center in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

The main event will be headlined by Nate Marquardt (31-10-2) who will be making his welterweight debut when he takes on the mammoth that is Anthony Johnson (9-3-0) at 170lbs. A 12-year veteran of the sport and one-time 185lbs title challenger, Marquardt last appeared at UFC 128, besting Dan Miller by unanimous decision before confirming his drop to 170lbs. "Rumble", after lying dormant due to injury woes in 2010, successfully marked his return to the division in March at UFC - Fight Night 24 when he defeated England's Dan Hardy via unanimous decision.

The evening's co-main event will feature two heavyweight sluggers in Pat Berry (6-2-0) and Cheick Kongo (15-6-2). Barry is coming off a decision victory against the durable Joey Beltran in January of this year and will look to make it two straight against the hulking Frenchman who most recently drew Travis Browne at UFC 120 in October of 2010.

Rounding out the main card are welterweights Martin Kampmann (17-5-0) and John Howard (14-6-0) in a critical match, as both men are coming off back-to-back losses albeit Kampmann's could have easily been wins, while Howard was dominated in each. A heavyweight match-up pitting Matt Mitrione (4-0-0) against Christian Morecraft (7-1-0) is also on tab as the Roufusport product tries to make it a perfect 5-0 inside the octagon to begin his mixed martial arts career.

Other bouts on the card:

Nate Marquardt vs. Anthony Johnson
Patrick Barry vs. Cheick Kongo
Tyson Griffin vs. Manny Gamburyan
Martin Kampmann vs. John Howard
Joe Stevenson vs. Javier Vasquez
Matt Mitrione vs. Christian Morecraft
Michael Johnson vs. Edward Faaloloto
TJ Grant vs. Charlie Brenneman
Charles Oliveira vs. Nik Lentz
Joe Lauzon vs. Curt Warburton
Matt Brown vs. Rich Attonito
Matt Grice vs. Ricardo Lamas

MMA Combat - UFC 130 Pick em'

MMA Combat - UFC 130 Pick em'

UFC 130 takes place this Saturday, May 28, at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, and is headlined by a light heavyweight tilt between Quinton "Rampage" Jackson (31-8-0) and Matt "The Hammer" Hamill (10-2-0).

Here is our pick em' feature for the main-card of the evening:

Brian Stann (10-3-0) vs. Jorge Santiago (23-8-0)

Jorge Santiago has had a very successful run since his departure from the UFC in December of 2006, after being knocked out by Alan Belcher. 11-1 in that stretch, Santiago was only stopped by the hard-hitting Polish National, Mamed Khalidov in November of 2009. Santiago is as well rounded as they come, with solid Muay Thai technique, great Jiu Jitsu, and a strong Judo base; but he does have a tendency to get tagged during exchanges and while working off his back.

Stann is one of those guys, particularly at 185, that you cannot afford to get tagged against; with 10 wins on his resume, "The All-American" has 7 [T]KOs to his name including his most recent work against the notoriously hard-headed Chris Leben, whom he stopped on strikes in the very first round of their January 1, 2011 contest. This will be a competitive fight, with both men threatening at times, but it is Brian Stann's power that will make the difference in this one as he stops Santiago late on strikes, spoiling his promotion return.

Travis Browne (10-0-1) vs. Stefan Struve (21-4-0)

It is no secret that Travis Browne, with 8 [T]KO stoppages to his name, hits very hard. The 6'7" Californian last appeared at UFC 120 where he battled French kickboxer Cheick Kongo to a unanimous draw. Before that he managed a TKO victory over under-sized TUF alumnus James McSweeny at the Ultimate Fighter 11 Finale; but considering his competition to this point in his career, which is collectively well under .500 as a group, it's difficult to say how Browne will hang with the battle-tested, young veteran of the sport that is Struve.

Struve also has difficulty with defense standing, and while that's bound to improve, he has been hit and hit very hard in many of his fights. But the Dutchman has showed incredible heart throughout his UFC stay, amassing a 5-2 record since February of 2009 when Junior dos Santos welcomed him to promotion with thudding hooks en route to a TKO stoppage. With 14 submission victories thus far in his career, the 6'11" "Skyscraper" utilizes his long-limbs well to tie opponents up and I expect that he'll discover that knack again his weekend with a submission win.

Rick Story (12-3-0) vs. Thiago Alves (18-7-0)

Rick Story is a powerhouse welterweight with 5 consecutive wins since his June 2009 loss to John Hathaway. His pressing style will not allow Alves to rest or set his feet and I do expect him to secure more than one takedown throughout the fight with his solid wrestling base. Since 2008, Story has won in 11 of 12 appearances and has an ability to grind on opponents, taking them deep into fights; with impressive wins against Jake Ellenberger and Johny Hendricks in that span, Story is a proven warrior against top flight competitors.

Alves looked phenomenal against John Howard, but that match-up was tailor-made for the one-time title challenger. Howard never presented a takedown threat, and was the noticeably smaller man in that bout, allowing "Pitbull" to get off with combinations from range. One aspect of Alves' training that appears to be back on track is his weight-cut with the help of the ever-popular Dolce Diet, which the American Top Team representative has become a big endorser of. Alves has succeeded against wrestlers in the past, toppling both Matt Hughes and Josh Koscheck, but has also fallen short against two of the division's best in champion Georges St. Pierre and Boilermaker Jon Fitch. How effective Alves is with kicks early will dictate the outcome of this match, but don't be surprised to see Story pull off the upset with two of three ringside judges giving him the nod in a razor close split decision win.

Roy Nelson (15-5-0) vs. Frank Mir (14-5-0)

Roy Nelson has established himself as more than just a gate-keeper in the UFC's heavyweight division since making his promotion debut in December of 2009; despite being dubbed underwhelming by UFC president Dana White, Nelson has managed 8 [T]KOs in his seven-year professional career. "Big Country" possesses a strong understanding of submissions with more-than-adequate boxing skills when paired up with the majority of the division. His decision loss to Junior dos Santos at UFC 117 was an admirable effort, and prior to that contest, Nelson had stopped both Stefan Struve and Brendan Schaub on strikes.

Mir has traditionally bounced back strong from disappointing results - or when his back is up against the wall - and regardless of his result against Mirko Filipovic at UFC 119, Mir was heavily criticized for the performance by the man in charge, Dana White. The former heavyweight champion also boasts strong boxing ability with a submission game to match, but has been known to wilt when the going gets tough and his wrestling ability has never been strong. A telling stat, is that all of Mir's 5 professional losses have come by [T]KO and the longer this fight goes, the more it sways in Nelson's favor. The loser of this match could very well be fighting for a chance to stay in the promotion in their next bout, a position neither man wants to find himself in, but it will be Nelson's perseverance that seizes the day in this one as he takes it on all three judges scorecards in a competitive match that sees opportunities on both ends.

Quinton Jackson (31-8-0) vs. Matt Hamill (10-2-0)

The main-event, although under-anticipated by the masses of main-stream fans, will prove to be every bit as exciting as the one that preceded it, before lightweight champion Frankie Edgar and challenger Gray Maynard had to pull out of the event with injuries suffered in training.

"Rampage" has great hands, although often lacks a jab that could better set-up those powerful hooks. As confidence in his boxing grew, so did Jackson's tendency to plant his feet, relying less on the explosive clinch work and grappling that made him a star during the PRIDE years. Still, at any given moment Jackson has the ability to turn Hamill's lights out with his devastating power. How badly he wants to make another title run for the 205lbs belt he once possessed remains to be seen, but "The Hammer" will answer a lot of questions.

Hamill at 10-2 is just that in this commentators eyes, although the results against Jon Jones and Michael Bisping respectively would be different. The fight against Jones should have been stopped, with Hamill a battered mess barely able to defend himself from the onslaught that was, until Jones - in an effort to land clean and finally get his stoppage - threw that illegal elbow that saw him disqualified; but the champ has done that to everyone in his path thus far. Rich Franklin came too early in Hamill's professional career, and I think we can all agree that Michael Bisping did not defeat Hamill at UFC 75 in Manchester, England. Expect Hamill to push the pace against "Rampage", using his pawing jab to keep him at bay while effectively scoring with a couple important takedowns en route to a unanimous decision nod.

MMA Combat - Ford Victorious, Stops Parisyan via Doctor Stoppage

MMA Combat - Ford Victorious, Stops Parisyan via Doctor Stoppage

The tough times continue for UFC veteran Karo Parisyan (19-7-0) as the Armenian dropped his second-straight contest on Thursday, May 19 at MMA Live 1 at the John Labatt Centre in London, Ontario, Canada; "The Heat" - who has picked up a victory once once in his last five bouts - went toe-to-toe with Canadian, Ryan "The Real Deal" Ford (15-3-0) in a welterweight showdown that headlined the evening's card.

Parisyan utilized his superior grappling technique early to gain favorable positions on the ground, but had to survive some scary moments standing as Ford pressed forward with an aggressive attack. Just as the Judoka seemed to be settling in for the decision victory, Ford landed a thudding knee that buckled his opponent, while opening a huge gash on his forehead. The ringside physician stopped the contest at 1:26 of the third round, handing Edmonton's Ryan Ford his third win in a row.

“My corner said 'get your head together and do something. Finish this fight now'... So I made sure to go out and finish the fight.” stated Ford in his post-fight interview.

Parisyan's next move is anyone's guess; many fighters have difficulty coping with losses, but Karo's recent past is one highlighted by struggles with anxiety, among other things, and it's increasingly difficult to say whether or not he'll bounce back stronger. At only 28 years old, Parisyan is still a remarkable talent with plenty of mileage left if he plays his cards right. Will "The Heat" re-capture the desire that made him one of the UFC's top welterweight contenders? Only time will tell, but we'll stay optimistic.

MMA Combat - Hermes Franca Arrested, Released by MFC

MMA Combat - Hermes Franca Arrested, Released by MFC

One-time UFC lightweight title challenger and nine-year veteran of sport, Hermes Franca (22-12-0), has been arrested in the State of Oregon on alleged charges of sexual abuse.

Franca formerly owned and operated a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu school out of Clackamas, Oregon, which is where the charges were laid; he turned himself into state authorities on Monday, May 16. Examiner.com broke the news on Thursday, and it has since been reported that the 36-year old had bail set at $250 000 with a trial scheduled for July 12 at 9 am PST in the Clackamas County Courthouse in Oregon City, Ore.

Maximum Fighting Championship had matched up Franca with fellow UFC veteran Drew Fickett (41-13-0) for their June 10 event, where the two would contest the promotion's lightweight title. Plans have since changed; MFC Owner and President Mark Pavelich had the following remarks regarding Franca's pending charges, and his relationship with the organization after competing three times in the month of April:

“Mr. Franca’s legal situation is a matter in the hands of law enforcement officials and soon to be going before the courts... Because of that, there will not be any further comment on those allegations, but I have taken immediate action to indicate that he is no longer going to be part of my organization.”

“Mr. Franca breached his contract by fighting outside of the organization only 15 days after his bout at MFC 29, and then he fought again six days after that in Brazil and lost,” said Pavelich. “I find these actions to be incredibly disrespectful to my company and Mr. Franca is no longer welcome as part of the Maximum Fighting Championship.”

MMA Combat - St. Pierre vs. Diaz at UFC 140?

Montreal’s David Simon, host of Ringside Report Radio on ‘The Team’ 990 AM and owner/writer for www.ringsidereport.net posted yesterday on his official twitter account that not only would the UFC return to “La Belle Province” for UFC 140 – expected to take place December 10, 2011 – but that UFC welterweight champ Georges St. Pierre (22-2-0) would likely defend his belt at the event, most probably, against Stockton, California’s favorite son, Nick Diaz (25-7-0).

“#UFC140 December 10 at the Bell Centre. Get ready #Montreal. The #UFC is coming back!!!!”

“Nick Diaz vs. GSP is a possibility for the main event of #UFC140 on December 10 in #Montreal.”

The speculation comes on the heels of a radio interview Simon conducted with UFC Director of Operations Tom Wright on Wednesday, May 18. The promotion has achieved great successes in Montreal thus far, and looks to maintain close ties with the city and market going forward.

“We know how important this market is to us and putting on great fights,” Wright said. “It’s a great venue (Bell Centre), it’s a great fan-base, it’s a great environment. The energy in that building is as good as any building in North America. We’ll always have a soft spot for Montreal.”

On Wednesday, May 18, the California State Athletic Commission by a vote of 4-1 decided to uphold the suspension of one-time UFC middleweight title challenger, Chael Sonnen (25-11-1). The promotion had plans to feature Sonnen as a coach opposite Michael Bisping on the next season of The Ultimate Figther reality series, but yesterday's ruling has effectively put an end to that agenda, and potentially the 34 year old, Oregon native's career.

Sonnen's nine-month journey with the CSAC began last August when his pre-fight sample was flagged for elevated testosterone levels; Sonnen took four hard-fought rounds from champion, Anderson Silva on August 7, 2010, before succumbing to an arm-bar submission in round five.

The California Code of Regulations explicitly states that licensees for boxing and mixed martial arts may have their licenses revoked for conduct which discredits their sport. One month ago, the CSAC announced that Sonnen would be suspended indefinitely on the back on two violations; one, that Sonnen was found to have made untruthful statements under oath at a December 2nd hearing, and two, for pleading guilty to money-laundering on April 8, 2011, in his home state of Oregon.

“I’ve worked for this chance my whole life, since I was nine, and I don’t want to retire today,” Sonnen stated at yesterday's hearing. “I volunteered in my community 18 hours a week the last decade. Never had a drop of alcohol in my life. Never smoked anything... I’m truly embarrassed from the last hearing and until now... I will not make these mistakes again. I will not ask for forgiveness again. Please just let me go back to work.”

Those words fell on deaf ears; as the common sentiment held by CSAC officials could be summed up in the remarks of Commissioner Eugene Hernandez: “Past actions are the best indicator of future performance.”

A formal announcement has not been made regarding Sonnen's future with the UFC and his career in general; tune in for updates as this story continues to unfold.

MMA Combat - Rocha vs. Cerrone on for UFC 131, Clementi faces Aoki at Dream 17

MMA Combat - Rocha vs. Cerrone on for UFC 131, Clementi faces Aoki at Dream 17

Tuesday night the UFC announced that TUF season 6 winner Mac Danzig (20-8-1) has been forced to pull out of his UFC 131 bout vs. Donald Cerrone (14-3-0) citing an injury suffered during training. Replacing Danzig at the event will be promotion newcomer Vagner Rocha (6-1-0).

A veteran of both Bellator and Strikeforce, Rocha last competed May 7th at Mixed Fighting Alliance – New Generation 5 where he posted a first round submission victory over Jacob Clark; four of his six professional career wins have come by way of submission. Rocha’s counterpart, “Cowboy” Donald Cerrone, is a submission specialist himself with twelve of fourteen wins coming via tap-out. Cerrone is a winner in three-straight appearances, and looks to make it 2-0 inside the octagon this summer in Vancouver, Canada.

Across the pond in Japan, Dream FC announced that Antonio McKee would not be making the trip to the Saitama Super Arena, and Dream 17 to face top-ten talent Shinya Aoki (27-5-0); rather, UFC veteran Rich Clementi (40-19-1) will fill the void on late notice, but stay-tuned as the past two weeks have been a game of musical chairs in regards to a solidified opponent for “Tobikan Judan.”

So far, Jamie Varner, Antonio McKee, Shane Nelson, and now Clementi have all been reported participants for the event. Clementi last competed April 30, 2011, at Superior Challenge 7 – Rise of Champions in Stockholm, Sweden, where he dropped a unanimous decision to Reza Madadi.

MMA Combat - Penn calls out Shields, Jake Returns Fire

MMA Combat - Penn calls out Shields, Jake Returns Fire

Tuesday, May 17, Former UFC welterweight and lightweight champion B.J. Penn (16-7-2) has officially called out recent title challenger Jake Shields (26-5-1) via twitter. The first message between the two highly regarded competitors was sent late Monday evening when Penn stated through his official account:

@jakeshieldsajj "I would never challenge one of Cesar Gracie's guys, but you've been calling me out for years.Let's do it! I'll contact Dana."

B.J. Penn called out Shields
Shields, who recently suffered his first defeat in over five years when he challenged promotion champion Georges St. Pierre April 30, at UFC 129, in Toronto Canada, wasted no time in response.

"I'm a BJ fan but let's get it on. Make the call" @bjpenndotcom "even better, let's make it the first 5 round non-title fight"

Possibly a cheap-shot at Penn's former conditioning woes, "The Prodigy" had only this to add shortly after.

@jakeshieldsajj "If that makes you feel more confident..... sure."

Could this be a late 2011 blockbuster in the making? Lets hope so.... A Jon Fitch vs. B.J. Penn rematch was hardly intriguing after their UFC 127 unanimous draw in February, and with both fighters getting hurt almost simultaneously during training, if you're a man of faith, you might consider that all happened for a reason.

MMA Combat - Schaub vs. Nogueira Confirmed for UFC 134

MONDAY May 16, UFC President Dana White confirmed earlier today that Brendan Schaub (8-1-1) will in fact face former PRIDE and UFC champion Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira (32-6-1) at UFC 134 - Rio, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil on August 27, 2011.

"The Hybrid" had been campaigning for the bout for some time, and will get his shot at adding another PRIDE FC legend to his growing resume this summer in hostile territory. Schaub is a winner in four straight fights since being knocked-out by Roy Nelson at the Ultimate Fighter 10 Finale in December of 2009. He last competed in March at UFC 128, where he stopped Mirko Cro-Cop via KO in round 3.

Schaub has managed four wins since Nogueira last competed inside the octagon, with "Minotauro" undergoing a series of surgeries in that time to repair an ailing hip and knee. Nogueira was stopped on punches in February of 2010 when he battled current UFC heavyweight champ Cain Velasquez in a title eliminator. The Brazilian star holds notable victories over Randy Couture, Tim Sylvia, Josh Barnett, Fabricio Werdum and Mirko Cro-Cop among others, and will look to dazzle the crowd once more in front of a home-town crowd at the HSBC Arena in Rio.

Check out this HILARIOUS question asked to UFC champion GSP!

Listen to the question this woman puts on the table for welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre at a UFC press conference; the champ negotiates the awkward moment well, but she really seems relentless in her pursuit of the French Canadian star!

Of all the ridiculous questions I've seen posed this one surely takes the cake, but I've gotta admit it's pretty hilarious!

UFC 130, Edgar and Maynard Out

Monday May 9, following the breaking news of all-encompassing medical insurance being extended to all contracted fighters, the UFC later had a more somber announcement to make; both 155lbs champion Frankie Edgar and undefeated challenger Gray Maynard have been forced to pull out of their UFC 130 rematch due to undisclosed injuries suffered during training.

“Frankie Edgar hurt his back and his rib, and Gray Maynard hurt his knee,” said UFC President Dana White on Monday.

As a result, Quinton “Rampage” Jackson (31-8-0) and Matt Hamill (10-2-0) will have their bout bumped to the headliner slot, while heavyweights Frank Mir (14-5-0) and Roy Nelson (15-5-0) will be featured as the evening’s co-main event.\

Unfortunately fans that were anticipating the third part to this thrilling rivalry will have to wait a little longer before realizing its conclusion. Gray Maynard remains the only man to hold a victory over Edgar when he did so in April of 2008 at UFC – Fight Night 13, but Edgar bounced back from sure defeat in round 1 on New Year’s day at UFC 125 when he salvaged a unanimous draw with the showing of some tremendous heart.

UFC 130 will take place on May 28, 2011 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Zuffa Extends Additional Medical-Insurance to All Contracted Fighters

Zuffa CEO Lorenzo Fertitta
Monday, May 9, Zuffa officials announced today - at a four-day fighter summit in Las Vegas, Nevada - that all fighters under contract with their promotions, the UFC and Strikeforce, would now be afforded accident-insurance coverage.

Formerly, only injuries sustained during a contracted fight would be covered in full by the organization, which was in compliance with requirements by the regulatory state-athletic commissions; but today's announcement ensures that all injuries, including those suffered in training, will be taken care of by the parent company.

UFC Chairman and CEO Lorenzo Fertitta had to follow to say:

"Our athletes are some of the very best in the world, and we've committed significant financial resources to provide them with insurance that complements the gold standard we have set for event-related coverage," UFC Chairman and CEO Lorenzo Fertitta stated in today's announcement. "We’re pleased to provide coverage that enables our athletes to seek and receive treatment for injuries sustained while preparing for bouts."

The organization's policy will now include 24-hour worldwide medical-life insurance and dental coverage with Zuffa picking up 100% of all premiums; Houston Casualty is the third party provider and a full-time claims processor will reportedly be in-house.

"As this sport continues to grow, we have been working hard to secure additional insurance coverage so that our athletes can perform at the highest levels," UFC president Dana White added. "We're proud to give our athletes access to this type of insurance."

How much the additional coverage will cost Zuffa is yet to be reported, but with 350+ athletes under contract further elaboration on the subject is expected shortly.

Pacquiao vs. Mosley - Results

Saturday May 7, Manny Pacquiao (53-3-2) successfully defended his WBO Welterweight World Title, defeating challenger "Suger" Shane Mosley (46-7-1) via unanimous decision (119-108, 120-108, 120-107). The bout took place in front of a packed house at the MGM Grand, in Las Vegas, Nevada, and will be remembered – if at all – as the year's blockbuster boxing tilt that never was.

For the better part of twelve rounds Mosley backpedaled and defended, throwing only FIVE combinations throughout the fight accordingly to punch-stat numbers. A frustrated Pacquiao was gracious in the post-fight interview, determining that Mosley was simply trying to time a fight-changing counter punch, but the 39-year old Californian simply could not pull the trigger.

Considered by many to be the best pound-for-pound boxer on the planet today, it is undetermined who the next challenger to Pacquiao’s throne may be, although Timothy Bradley and Zab Judah seem the front-runners early on.

There may have been a lack of excitement in the evening’s main-event, but the Super Bantamweight Championship was a thriller all the way. Mexican, Jorge Arce (57-6-2) blitzed young champion Wilfredo Vazquez Jr. (19-1-1) handing the Puerto Rican his first professional defeat via 12th round TKO, becoming the new WBO super bantamweight champion.

Official results can be found below:

Pacquiao defeated Mosley via unanimous decision (119-108, 120-108, 120-107).

· Super Middleweight bout: Alfonso López III vs. Kelly Pavlik
Pavlik defeated López via majority decision (95-95, 98-92, 99-91).
· Light Welterweight bout: Mike Alvarado vs. Raymond Narh

Preliminary card
· Light Welterweight bout: José Benavidez vs. James Hope

Give it up for "The Janitor"

There’s something to be said for longevity, particularly when it’s accompanied by great success. Over the course of a fourteen-year professional career – in which time the competitor has never dropped back to back contests, and in fact, has never even traded wins with losses in that span – Vladimir Matyushenko has made his imprint on the sport of mixed martial arts.

The Belarusian has started to achieve heights that will be realized by few men, and his knack for bouncing back from losses is something to be commended, not to mention a great way to stay employed. “The Janitor” holds a record of 26-5-0 with nine [T]KOs, seven submissions, and ten decision victories to his credit; his career losses were at the hands of only Vernon White, Tito Ortiz, Andrei Arlovski, Antonio Rogerio Nogueira, and Jon Jones, each being in the prime of their careers at the time of defeat.

A two-time National Junior College champion in freestyle wrestling, The Janitor possesses the kind of base discipline that has permitted greats such as Mark Coleman and Randy Couture to have long and prosperous careers themselves. With age, as is often the case, Matyushenko utilizes more of a Greco-roman style in recent years with extensive clinch-work

Today, 40 year old Matyushenko – a winner in his last two outings – shows no signs of slowing down. At 205lbs, it’s tough to imagine another title run with a recent loss against the UFC’s newest superstar and light heavyweight champion Jon “Bones” Jones, although with Matyushenko’s history you simply can’t put it past him.

**Vladimir Matyushenko's next fight will be his last on a four-fight contract signed in August of 2010 with the UFC**

The Score Fighting Series in Mississauga, Ontario

Wednesday April 4, Score Media Inc. officially announced that they will be holding an event at the Hershey Centre in Mississauga, Ontario, scheduled for June 10, 2011. Mississauga is Ontario’s third largest city by population and ranks sixth inside Canada with nearly 700 000 inhabitants; the show will mark the first time the city has hosted a mixed martial arts event and the venue has a capacity of 5400-6000 persons depending on seating arrangements.

Hershey Centre, Mississauga, Ontario, Canada
Although the card is yet to be announced, there are a number of fighters already signed to participate in the event including UFC veterans Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou (11-8-0), and Canada’s own Joe “El Dirte” Doerksen (45-15-0). Other notable competitors include Shooto veteran Antonio Carvalho, Jordan Mein (who recently bested Josh Burkman this past month in Orillia, Ontario), Adrian Wooley, and BJJ ace Jorge Britto.

Team Quest’s Sokoudjou burst onto the scene in 2007 when he knocked out perennial top ten, Antonio Rogerio Nogueira in 23 seconds of the first round at PRIDE 33; less than two months later, “The African Assassin” would follow that up with a knockout of world ranked Ricardo Arona in under two minutes at PRIDE 44. Since that time Sokoudjou has traded wins and losses in pairs, but with his latest two appearances being the former, he will look to snap that pattern June 10, in Canada.

Doerksen, out of Winnipeg, Canada, is a twelve-year veteran of the sport and holds one of the more impressive resumes in Canadian mixed martial arts history. The 33 year old has secured 33 victories by way of submission, and holds notable wins over Tom Lawlor, Patrick Cote, Ed Herman, Chris Leben, and Denis Kang to name a few. “El Dirte” has made several stints with the UFC but was recently cut after his split decision defeat to Dan Miller at UFC 124; a loser in three-straight, Doerksen will look to regain his winning form this June in front of a partisan crowd.

dos Anjos Replaces Dunham at UFC 132

On May 3, UFC lightweight Evan Dunham was forced to pull out of his contest with George Sotiropoulos scheduled for July 2, at UFC 132 due to an undisclosed injury. It didn’t take long for the promotion to find a replacement as Rafael dos Anjos has agreed to fill the void at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada this summer.

Dana White had the following to say via UFC.com regarding the match-up on; “Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt Dos Anjos has won ‘Fight of the Night’ and ‘Submission of the Night’ awards, and Sotiropoulos has won ‘Fight of the Night’ twice, so I expect an amazing fight."

After posting three consecutive victories inside the octagon dos Anjos (14-5-0) fell short in his last outing, tapping to Clay Guida in the third round as a result of a jaw injury. The Brazilian Jiu Jitsu ace who holds seven victories by way of submission and has lost back-to-back contests only once in his career to date (Jeremy Stephens and Tyson Griffin).

Sotiropoulos (14-3-0) is also coming off a loss, as the submission specialist was bested by Dennis Siver at UFC 127 - Penn vs. Fitch via unanimous decision. The Aussie was a perfect 7-0 inside the octagon before that bout and looks to get back in the winning column, and title picture, with a win this summer. Sotiropoulos has finished eight of his opponents via submission and has never been stopped in his professional career.

Other confirmed bouts include:

UFC Bantamweight Championship
Dominick Cruz (No. 1 BW) vs. Urijah Faber (No. 3 BW)

Jason Miller vs. Aaron Simpson
Wanderlei Silva vs. Chris Leben
Brian Bowles vs. Takeya Mizugaki
Carlos Condit vs. Dong Hyun Kim
Rafael dos Anjos vs. George Sotiropoulos
Tito Ortiz vs. Ryan Bader
Matt Wiman vs. Dennis Siver
Melvin Guillard vs. Shane Roller
Andre Winner vs. Anthony Njokuani

The Prospect of Diaz vs. GSP Edit Blog Entry

UFC 129 saw Georges St. Pierre (22-2-0) once again defended his welterweight title against a top five welterweight, and one that hadn’t lost in nearly six years while compiling 15 wins in that time. Jake Shields was a game challenger, although I personally wonder how he would have fared against a more confident St. Pierre who was noticeably concerned with an irritated/injured eye early on.

The UFC is now faced with a situation where the champion has handily defeated six of the top seven welterweights – accordingly to several credible ranking sites – in mixed martial arts today; Nick Diaz (25-7-1) remains the lone man out, coming in at number six on Sherdog.com’s welterweight top ten, and is the only man currently outside of the UFC banner in the bunch.

If there was ever a time to capitalize on the Strikeforce welterweight champion’s popularity, particularly in the West coast, the time is now. No remaining welterweight inside the UFC has the marketability that Diaz would bring to this main-event; the Stockton native is riding an extreme confidence high on the back of ten consecutive wins, and as a tri-athlete, has the kind of gas tank to continue pushing the pace against the notoriously cardio-strong GSP. His Jiu-Jitsu is of a high level, which will rival if not surpass St. Pierre in that area, and his offensive boxing continues to improve by leaps and bounds with each bout.

It is worth mentioning however, that Nick Diaz has not fought a high-level MMA wrestler in some time, arguably since his TKO victory over Gleison Tibau at UFC 65 in November of 2006. Diaz has never possessed the kind of takedown defense or strength to ward off powerful wrestlers; that blueprint was written by Diego Sanchez, Joe Riggs, and Sean Sherk respectively in 05/06, and remains the only time Diaz has lost consecutive matches in his career to date.

Georges St. Pierre is perhaps the best mixed martial arts wrestler in the sport’s short history; his timing and explosiveness is unparalleled and his speed will be on par with Stockton’s favorite son. Taking a glimpse at their most recent victories tells a tall tale; while Diaz has toppled (literally) Zaromskis, Sakurai, Noons, Santos, and Daley… St. Pierre has arguably won every round in his past five bouts – and beyond – against the likes of B.J. Penn, Thiago Alves, Dan Hardy, Josh Koscheck, and Jake Shields.

Bringing Nick Diaz into the UFC without the intention of granting him an immediate title shot, or presenting him with a favorable style match-up first would be detrimental to the marketing value he currently offers. In this writer’s opinion, it’s highly likely that either of Jon Fitch, Thiago Alves, Josh Koscheck, or Jake Ellenberger could derail that hype and Zuffa knows this. Not to mention, with Cesar Gracie Academy teammate Jake Shields dropping the most recent of a growing list of decisions on St. Pierre’s resume, Nick Diaz also presents an attractive storyline in the way of revenge…

It will be interesting to see how Zuffa handles these negotiations, and the extent to which they’re willing to bend. Dana White had initially stated that cross-promotion super fights were not an option for the UFC brand, but at this point, what alternative do they have?

UFC 134 - Rio adds Thiago vs. Mitchell

Paulo Thiago will be the crowd favorite in Rio
UFC 134 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil continues to shape up on paper like one of the year's best, adding once beaten David Mitchell vs. Brazilian standout, Paulo Thiago in a welterweight showdown to the card.

"I'm signing my contract right now and I'm very happy ," Thiago told Sherdog.com on Monday evening. "Fighting in Brazil again is like a dream.  All my friends and family will be in Rio de Janeiro."

13-3-0 Thiago last competed at UFC 121 in October of last year where he dropped a unanimous decision to Diego Sanchez; the loss marked the first time the now 30 year old Brazilian has lost back to back fights in his career, after losing out on the judge's cards against Martin Kampmann prior to that.

After starting his career a perfect 11-0-0, David Mitchell stumbled out of the blocks in his UFC debut dropping a unanimous decision to Anthony Waldburger at UFC Fight Night 22 in September of 2010.  The 31 year old Californian owns 9 victories by way of submission in his 5 year career.

UFC 134 will be headlined by middleweight champion Anderson Silva when he attempts to defend his title against Japanese grappler - and the last man to hold a victory over Silva (by way of disqualification) - Yushin Okami.  The event takes place August 27, at the HSBC Arena, which has a capacity of 18 000.

  • Dana White announces that UFC legend Matt Hughes will take on TUF season one winner Diego Sanchez in a welterweight contest this fall; a date is yet to be determined.
  • The UFC touches down in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, marking the promotion's first event inside Canada's most populous province. UFC 129 set several records, including live gate at +12 million and a live attendance record of 55 724.
  • Jose Aldo successfully defends his title against game challenger Mark Hominick. Hominick took the Brazilian all five rounds despite early set-backs, including a dominate 5th that saw an eventful finish. Aldo however retains his title at featherweight, setting the stage for Chad Mendes later this summer.
  • Georges St. Pierre once again defends his welterweight crown defeating challenger Jake Shields via unanimous decision. There are few names if any, deserving of the next crack at 170lbs, which has opened the doors to speculation that perhaps Zuffa will arrange a superfight with Strikeforce champion Nick Diaz.

    UFC 129 Results

Saturday Apr30, The Rogers Center in Toronto, Ontario, Canada hosted a fantastic evening of UFC action highlighted by two title defenses, successful promotion debuts, and the end of an era as "The Natural" will likely call it quits after a storied 14 year career.

Randy "The Natural" Couture has done it all inside the octagon, but this past weekend against Brazilian star Lyoto Machida it was not to be. Many onlookers in attendance were hoping for that storybook finish and after a competitive first, it seemed likely that as the fight wore on, Couture would become more effective with his grinding clinch-work style. Machida had other plans however, and in the second frame after a series of faints, found the opening he was looking for as he landed a thunderous switch front-kick not unlike that thrown by teammate Anderson Silva a couple months ago. Machida found his mark right under the 47 year old Couture's jaw sending him to the canvas for the last time.

Jose Aldo successfully defended his UFC featherweight title when he toppled Canadian Mark Hominick via unanimous decision. Despite a late surge by "The Machine" that saw Hominick pour on the ground and pound for nearly the duration of the fifth round, Aldo did enough in the first three and a half to secure the win. A victory of sorts, Hominick not only went the distance in a fight odds-makers tabbed him to lose and lose big, but the local favorite even managed to steal a round or two on the cards, a feat accomplished by few if any of late against the reigning champ.

The main-event of the evening went as anticipated by many, although sight troubles early had St. Pierre bothered and perhaps even more conservative than he is known for being of late. Regardless, the champ controlled the action throughout the contest and was never put in danger by challenger Shields. A unanimous nod was final result, but the match certainly presented its challenges for the reigning welterweight champ. With Roberts, Diaz, and Shields all dropping decisions it was a rough night for the Cesar Gracie camp who had been riding a high of late on the backs of their Strikeforce talent.

    The Re-introduction of "Mayhem"

Jason "Mayhem" Miller's re-introduction to the Ultimate Fighting Championship middleweight division is a much needed infusion of a hard-nosed marketable personality, but don't expect a title run.

Known for his eccentric entrances Miller (24-7-0) is a gritty scrapper with strong jiu jitsu ability boasting 14 finishes by way of submission. The thirty year old Atlanta, Georgia, native is a winner in two straight bouts and brings with him a nearly cult-like following, which the UFC's 185lbs division is sorely lacking.

Saturday, the UFC announced that the newly signed veteran who will now make his second stint with the promotion is tabbed to face "A-Train" Aaron Simpson (8-2-0) in his return to the octagon at UFC 132, July 2, at the Mandalay Bay Events Center, Las Vegas, Nevada.

Miller is a smart fighter, able to adjust his game depending on the direction of the bout or opportunities provided by his opposition; he possess above average conditioning and is often able to push the pace as the fight wears on, however, his wrestling and speed remain the weaker parts of his arsenal and the former will have to be addressed if he is to become more than a gatekeeper with great entertainment value.

The middleweight division is one with balance at the top, but like others before it, the future suggests that an increasing number of wrestlers are on their way to prominence. Those who are already there such as Aaron Simpson, Yushin Okami, Mark Munoz, and Chael Sonnen all possess the tools to stifle Miller's attack with their grinding top control styles.

The good news? Santiago, Bisping, W. Silva, Maia, and Belfort are all exciting style match-ups for Miller and his immense durability will likely be his greatest asset in such encounters.

The problem? Several of those top contenders are larger and physically stronger than "Mayhem" - who used to compete as light as 170lbs - and could very well take close wins on the back of that strength advantage.

My guess is that Miller will provide some much needed excitement at 185lbs, but will drop a close decision to Simpson in his return to promotion; the UFC will want to capitalize on his draw power, throwing him a better match-up if the first plays out like I imagine it will. Santiago, Silva, or Bisping would all be thrilling but sooner than later Miller will need to re-invent himself to stay relevant, returning to 170lbs.

Jason "Mayhem" Miller is an incredibly durable fighter who often improves as the contest wears on, but his place is not among the 185lbs top 5 elite. You should expect the excitement that makes him so endearing to his fans, but this commentator does not see a title shot in his future. It is however, probably that he can become the mainstay that fighters such as Chris Leben, and/or Lytle have become; there's nothing wrong with building a career like that!

MMA Combat - Diego Sanchez vs. Matt Hughes – An interesting decision

MMA Combat - Diego Sanchez vs. Matt Hughes – An interesting decision

UFC President Dana White announced Thursday, April 28, that Diego Sanchez (23-4-0) will square off against UFC legend Matt Hughes (45-8-0) in a welterweight match this fall, although no specific event or date has been determined.

    Diego "The Dream" Sanchez
Matt Hughes last competed at UFC 123 – Rampage vs. Machida, where he was knocked out in 21 seconds by a free-swinging B.J. Penn; prior to that bout the Hillsboro, Il. native compiled three consecutive wins against the likes of Matt Serra, Renzo Gracie and Ricardo Almeida, and owns a record 18 career victories inside the octagon.

Sanchez, a Team Jackson representative out of Albuquerque, New Mexico has posted back-to-back wins, including a controversial unanimous decision over Martin Kampmann this past March, but a win nonetheless. “The Dream” is 2-1 since returning to welterweight ranks and has been stopped inside the distance only once in 27 professional appearances.

Why Matt Hughes though? This fight puzzles me for a couple reasons; Diego has been outspoken on his twitter account regarding his desire to face someone coming off a win or with considerable standing in the UFC’s welterweight division; fans have called for Thiago Silva, Carlos Condit, even a rematch with John Hathaway makes sense. At one time, Matt Hughes was as big as it got, but today the 37 year-old Midwest farmer is no longer in the prime of his career.

If styles make matches, this one has all the makings of a stalwart. Diego is more than adequate standing, but has never shown the kind of dynamism demonstrated by the sport’s top strikers. Although Hughes is more vulnerable to the knockout today than in years past, he still possess the kind of defense that should handle Diego’s onslaught. With his strength and wrestling pedigree, I expect Hughes to challenge Sanchez in the wrestling department as well, while holding his own in the submission exchanges.

This is the kind of fresh challenge that could bring out the best in Matt Hughes; should the 13-year veteran of the sport regain the conditioning that made him a terror early in his career, it’s quite possible he could stifle “The Dream’s” momentum at 170lbs.

For Sanchez, there is far more on the line here… A loss would drop his stock significantly at welterweight and he has already expressed the desire to avoid a cut back down to 155lbs. Sanchez like many before him, may find himself as one of those men simply not afforded the opportunity to fight at a weight best suited to his frame; but not to worry, his entertainment value has secured his job for some time to come.
