MMA Combat - Penn calls out Shields, Jake Returns Fire

MMA Combat - Penn calls out Shields, Jake Returns Fire

Tuesday, May 17, Former UFC welterweight and lightweight champion B.J. Penn (16-7-2) has officially called out recent title challenger Jake Shields (26-5-1) via twitter. The first message between the two highly regarded competitors was sent late Monday evening when Penn stated through his official account:

@jakeshieldsajj "I would never challenge one of Cesar Gracie's guys, but you've been calling me out for years.Let's do it! I'll contact Dana."

B.J. Penn called out Shields
Shields, who recently suffered his first defeat in over five years when he challenged promotion champion Georges St. Pierre April 30, at UFC 129, in Toronto Canada, wasted no time in response.

"I'm a BJ fan but let's get it on. Make the call" @bjpenndotcom "even better, let's make it the first 5 round non-title fight"

Possibly a cheap-shot at Penn's former conditioning woes, "The Prodigy" had only this to add shortly after.

@jakeshieldsajj "If that makes you feel more confident..... sure."

Could this be a late 2011 blockbuster in the making? Lets hope so.... A Jon Fitch vs. B.J. Penn rematch was hardly intriguing after their UFC 127 unanimous draw in February, and with both fighters getting hurt almost simultaneously during training, if you're a man of faith, you might consider that all happened for a reason.
