UFC 141 - Lesnar vs. Overeem, Results - MMA Combat

UFC 141 - Lesnar vs. Overeem, Results - MMA Combat

In what was, in many ways, a record breaking year for the Ultimate Fighting Championship 2011 finished with a bang as UFC 141 - Lesnar vs. Overeem delivered on all levels; going live from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, the event would feature a heavyweight title-contention eliminator when "The Demolition Man" Alistair Overeem took on former UFC heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar in his first promotion appearance. In the co-main event, Stockton, California's Nate Diaz battled "Cowboy" Donald Cerrone in a pivotal match-up at 155lbs.

The main-event of the evening saw one man live up to the billing, and unfortunately for the former NCAA wrestling standout, the night was not meant for him. "The Reem" swarmed Lesnar with big shots from the opening bell, testing the hulking wrestler's ability to stay composed under fire. But composed Lesnar was not, as Overeem connected with knees and fists at will until a left body-kick to the liver sent the big man to the canvas where he desperately covered up until the ensuing ground and pound was mercifully stopped at 2:26 of the opening stanza. With the victory, Alistair Overeem claims the number one contender spot at heavyweight and will square off with champion Junior dos Santos in the first half of 2012.

The fight of the night was without question the show put on by lightweight contenders Donald Cerrone and Nate Diaz as the two proficient strikers went toe-to-toe over three rounds of action that saw the Cesar Gracie standout get the better of theTeam Jackson representative with superior output and combinations of punches. While effective with counter low-kicks in the second and third rounds, the story of the fight was the accuracy of Diaz's boxing that showcased itself at the very highest level we have seen it to-date. Nate Diaz makes a huge statement with the victory, and will see himself in the title contention picture in 2012.

Johny Hendricks shook up the 170lb division on Friday night when he levelled long-time #2 ranked welterweight Jon Fitch with a devastating overhand left early in round one. The official stoppage came just twelve seconds into the fight as Hendricks becomes the first man to stop Jon Fitch inside the octagon and makes a huge statement with the 'W'.

Full results from UFC 141 - Lesnar vs. Overeem are below:

Alistair Overeem def. Brock Lesnar via TKO (strikes) - Round 1, 2:26
Nate Diaz def. Donald Cerrone via unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 29-28)

UFC 141 - Lesnar vs. Overeem, Preview and Main-Event Predictions - MMA Combat

UFC 141 - Lesnar vs. Overeem, Preview and Main-Event Predictions - MMA Combat

Friday 23 December 2011

On the Cusp of Contendership: UFC 141 - MMA Combat

On the Cusp of Contendership: UFC 141 - MMA Combat

With all the hype surrounding the upcoming UFC 141 main-event - which will go down Friday, December 30, 2011, at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada - the magnitude of a couple fights taking place immediately before it has been overshadowed by the hulking heavyweights who will determine the division's next number one contender.

UFC president Dana White has already promised that spot to the winner between Brock Lesnar and Alistair Overeem, but UFC 141 may discover multiple contenders in their respective weight classes.

Submissions-A-Plenty, Lightweights Primed and Determined

If victorious, Donald "Cowboy" Cerrone could easily make a case to be his division's next #1 contender after Benson Henderson and Frankie Edgar hash it out at UFC 144 to determine the top-dog at 155lbs; Cerrone is already a perfect 4-0 in 2011 and with a fifth win would complete one of the most successful calendar years in recent memory at lightweight, or any weight for that matter. His previous two outings, which resulted in first round stoppages of Charles Oliveira and Dennis Siver will weigh heavy in the minds of the UFC upper-brass when determining who is most deserving in the uber-stacked lightweight division.

Standing in his way is Cesar Gracie standout Nate Diaz who has never been stopped inside the distance in his tenure with the promotion, despite facing several top-talents along the way at both 170 and 155lbs. Diaz would present an interesting style clash for whoever emerges victorious at UFC 144, but not unlike his older brother, his Achilles heel has always been strong wrestlers who often dominate position over fifteen minutes. In my books, Diaz would have to overcome that obstacle by first defeating either a Gray Maynard or Clay Guida in a rematch before a title shot is granted; if he's unable to tackle that test, it's unlikely he would fare much better against more diversified wrestlers in Edgar and/or Henderson.

Welterweights with Opportunity Knockin'

The clash between powerful wrestlers Jon Fitch and Johny Hendricks could easily decide the first #1 contender to the newly declared UFC interim welterweight title whose carrier will be either Nick Diaz or another Team Jackson standout in Carlos Condit when the two battle for the honor at UFC 143, February 4, in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Fitch is one of the most successful fighters in UFC history losing only to reigning champion Georges St. Pierre over five rounds in what would be his only title-shot in fifteen promotion appearances to-date. Hendricks represents the "new school" of powerful wrestlers contending at 170lbs today. The twenty-eight year old Oklahoma native has compiled a record of 6-1 inside the octagon and is known for his knockout power in both hands.

If Fitch was to walk away with his hand raised at UFC 141, the former Purdue wrestling captain would be undefeated in his previous seven outings and few could argue against him as the division's next #1 contender. Critics point to his wrestling centric, decision-heavy style, but a win is a win regardless of how it comes. 13-1-1 under the UFC banner, Fitch has grinded his way to the judge's cards eleven times overcoming opponents with exception heart, conditioning, and an understated Jiu Jitsu game; the AKA standout would likely open as a betting favorite against either Carlos Condit or Nick Diaz with a win on December 30.

Once defeated Johny Hendricks most recently appeared against Mike Pierce at UFC 133 - Evans vs. Ortiz II, picking up a narrow decision win over the Team Quest product. Three times he has stopped UFC opponents on strikes and was out-worked only by Rick Story in December of last year which represents the only blemish on a sterling record. The four time All-American and two time NCAA D1 wrestling champion could stake his claim as the next in line with a win over the veteran Fitch who has long been considered the second best welterweight on the planet; ideally, I would have him fight the winner of Alves vs. Kampmann before considering a chance at the belt as each would provide a unique test to that which he has faced thus far inside the octagon, but the winner of Sanchez vs. Ellenberger will be realized half a month sooner and would also serve as a good fit for title-contention.

Don't miss out on this must-see event Friday, December 30, 2011, only on Pay Per View and UFC.tv.

Werdum vs. Nelson Anticipated for UFC 143 - MMA Combat

Werdum vs. Nelson Anticipated for UFC 143 - MMA Combat

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu ace Fabricio Werdum (14-5-1) will reportedly make his UFC return on February 4, 2012, when he locks horns with "Big Country" Roy Nelson (16-6-0) at UFC 143, scheduled to take place at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, Nevada. MMAWeekly.com initially confirmed the news Wednesday afternoon.

The PRIDE, UFC, and Strikeforce veteran has been lobbying for a return to the world's premier promotion for several months now with a renewed confidence in his game after an impressive three-fight run to begin his tenure with Strikeforce, culminating with a win over heavyweight great Fedor Emelianenko in June of 2010. Werdum would fall short in his goal to win the Strikeforce Heavyweight Grand-Prix however, dropping his most recent contest to former Strikeforce champion Alistair Overeem this past summer in the tournament quarter-finals. The thirty-four year old Brazilian is 2-2 under the UFC banner, sandwiching wins over Gabriel Gonzaga and Brandon Vera between losses to former champion Andrei Arlovski and current title-holder Junior dos Santos.

Ultimate Fighter Season 10 winner Roy Nelson picked up a much needed victory at UFC 137 - Penn vs. Diaz when he TKO'd Croatian legend Mirko "CroCop" Filipovic at 1:30 of the third round, taking his record to 3-2 inside the octagon; prior to that performance, Nelson surrendered back-to-back decisions to division front-runners Junior dos Santos and Frank Mir and has received heavy criticism from UFC president Dana White for a perceived lack of fitness in the past. The American grappling specialist is considered one of the division's best on the ground, but he'll need to be at the top of his game when he runs into the highly decorated Brazilian Jiu Jitsu World champion that is Werdum.

Emelianenko Makes Return to Japan, NYE - MMA Combat

Emelianenko Makes Return to Japan, NYE - MMA Combat

Heavyweight great Fedor "The Last Emperor" Emelianenko (32-4-0) will make his return to Japan for DREAM "Genki Desu Ka! New Year! 2011" which will emanate from the Saitama Super Arena in Saitama, Japan, December 31, 2011.

Emelianenko will lock horns with 2008 Judo Olympic gold medalist Satoshi Ishii (4-1-1) at the event; Ishii is undefeated in his previous five bouts since dropping his mixed martial arts debut to veteran Judoka Hidehiko Yoshida in December of 2009. Most recently, the twenty-four year old Japanese standout fought Brazilian enigma Paulo Filho to a controversial unanimous draw in September, but Filho himself acknowledged he was undeserving of the result after the bout, which took place in Manaus, Amazonas, Brazil, at Amazon Forrest Combat 1.

"The Last Emperor" rebounded from the first losing streak of his storied career on November 20, when he defeated American grappling ace Jeff Monson via unanimous decision over three dominate rounds. Prior to that, Emelianenko had lost consecutive bouts to Fabricio Werdum, Antonio Silva, and Dan Henderson respectively.

DREAM "Genki Desu Ka! New Year! 2011" is expected to air live on HDNet, and will feature a pair of title fights when lightweight champion Shinya Aoki puts his strap on the line against former Sengoku champ, Satoru Kitaoka; and newly crowned featherweight king Hiroyuki Takaya squares off with former Shooto title-holder, Takeshi Inoue.

Report on Nogueira's Arm: Surgery Not Necessary - MMA Combat

Report on Nogueira's Arm: Surgery Not Necessary - MMA Combat

UFC light heavyweight Antonio Rogerio Nogueira tweeted Monday news regarding his twin brother's arm, which was broken Saturday night, December 10, at UFC 140 in Toronto, Canada.

“We’ve just had a medical diagnosis,” wrote Minotoro. “[Dr. Itamura] said he would prefer not to do surgery, that [the bone] will calcify by itself and that in five months, he’s fighting again.”

Rodrigo Nogueira was on a sure path to victory when he had Frank Mir staggered in their heavyweight contest Saturday; but an ill-fated decision to secure a Guillotine finish left "Minotauro" on the bottom with an arm in jeopardy as Mir grabbed hold of a Kimura. Determined to find his way out, Nog refused to tap and paid the price with a broken humerus.

UFC president Dana White shared his thoughts earlier this week on the future of the heavyweight great:

"You've got to look at a guy's entire career, not just how it's ending. 'Big Nog' has been in wars. I was at the PRIDE fight when he fought Mirko 'Cro Cop' (Filipovic). 'Cro Cop' was just blasting him with kicks to the body and shots to the head. Then [Nogueira] ends up pulling off that submission win in the second round. He's had a career where he's been through wars.

"'Big Nog' is a nice guy, and he's a guy whom I respect. I know they get pissed off at me when I say this stuff, but again, it doesn't matter. Unfortunately, or fortunately, I'm the one that makes these decisions. I'm going to have to sit down and talk to him. I don't want to see him get hurt – or anybody else."

Speaking with MMA Junkie on Monday, Nogueira's manager Ed Soars made the follow comment with concern to his client's future:

"Nogueira is no rookie when it comes to overcoming adversity and issues like this, so right now it's just too early to decide that; but I don't believe that's the last time we'll see Nogueira in the cage."

The Lethbridge, Alberta native is 2-0 under the Strikeforce banner and has captured twenty of his twenty-three career wins inside the distance with thirteen of those coming by way of [T]KO.

St. Louis, Missouri, native Tyron Woodley is undefeated in his young career with a wrestling intensive attack and grinding pace that will give the vast majority of his opposition fits. Representing American Top Team, the twenty-nine year old has captured all but two of his victories inside the Strikeforce cage, and most recently defeated one-time title challenger Paul Daley via unanimous decision in July of this year.

Strikeforce - Rockhold vs. Jardine will feature a middleweight title bout between newly crowned champion Luke Rockhold (9-1-0), representing American Kickboxing Academy, and "The Dean of Mean," UFC veteran and Team Jackson representative, Keith Jardine (17-9-2).

Koscheck Draws Pierce as UFC 143 Replacement - MMA Combat

Koscheck Draws Pierce as UFC 143 Replacement - MMA Combat

UFC welterweight contender Mike Pierce revealed Thursday night via his twitter account that he will be stepping in to replace Carlos Condit against Josh Koscheck at UFC 143, after Condit was bumped up the card to challenge Nick Diaz for the interim title with news of an extended layoff for UFC welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre due to injury.

It's on! KOS tried wiggling outta this one too, but Feb 4th he's mine. wrote Pierce (13-4-0, 5-2 UFC)

December 7th, Koscheck took to the social network lobbying for a fight at 185lbs, but UFC matchmakers preferred a bout with Pierce and have since confirmed the pairing.

I am fighting FEB. 4th still I'll tweet who very soon. I just asked #UFC if I can fight 185 for a fight! But we will see if they let me. said Koscheck (16-5-0, 14-5 UFC)

Representing AKA, Koscheck last appeared at UFC 135 - Jones vs. Rampage on September 24, when he defeated UFC legend Matt Hughes via TKO at 4:59 of the first round. The bout was Koscheck's first in nearly ten months, with an orbital fracture sidelining the one-time title challenger for most of 2011.

Pierce competed three times inside the octagon in 2011, with a split decision loss to Johny Hendricks sandwiched between victories over Kenny Robertson and most recently, Paul Bradley at UFC on FOX 1. The Team Quest representative has never been stopped inside the distance in seventeen professional appearances.

Miguel Torres Released by UFC - MMA Combat

Miguel Torres Released by UFC - MMA Combat

Former WEC bantamweight champion and top pound-for-pound fighter Miguel Torres has been released by the Ultimate Fighting Championship for a post he made via his twitter account Wednesday that struck a cord with UFC brass.

If a rape van was called a surprise van more women wouldn’t mind going for rides in them. Everyone like[s] surprises.

Speaking Thursday with SI.com, White had the following comments on the subject:

"This morning I’m on [Michael] Landsburg’s show, up here in Canada, and he hits me with the quote of what he tweeted. Now there’s no explanation for that. There’s absolutely nothing I could say to make any sense of that, and the fact that he even thinks that’s funny or that’s a joke, it disturbs me. It bothers me. Again, you’re dealing with a guy that’s a smart guy, that owns his own business, that’s been one of the top fighters in the world forever. And I cut him today. He’s no longer with the UFC."

Torres (40-4-0) was 2-1 inside the octagon defeating Antonio Banuelos and Nick Pace, with a controversial decision loss to Demetrious Johnson sandwiched in between. The thirty year old Tristar representative has stopped thirty-two opponents in a career spanning nearly twelve years with twenty-three of those coming by way of submission.

Torres, who claims he was quoting a popular TV series, defended his right to expression regardless of the joke's nature; one such example is found below.

Jokes on racism, pedifiles, terrorism, & other fucked up things is ok, but some are off limits. What a sensitive world we live in.

GSP Out 10 Months with Torn ACL, Diaz vs. Condit for Interim Title - MMA Combat

News broke this afternoon, Wednesday, December 7, that reigning UFC welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre has suffered a torn ACL and will be sidelined for roughly ten months. Dana White first announced the news via his twitter account, and determined that Carlos Condit will now face Nick Diaz on February 4, 2012, for an interim welterweight title.

GSP blown acl will be out for 10 mos. Now Condit vs Diaz for the interim welterweight title on Feb 4th in Las Vegas!!

Only weeks prior to his scheduled bout at UFC 137 - where St. Pierre was to take on Carlos Condit in the main-event - the Canadian icon was forced to pull out due to a knee injury sustained while training. GSP vs. Condit was scratched from the card and was expected to take place at a later date, but after Nick Diaz convincingly defeated former champ B.J. Penn, Condit was asked to step aside in order to make the fight fans wanted to see happen.

It seems those same fans will have to wait a little longer as the list of injuries continue to pile up for the dominate welterweight king.

Eddie Alvarez Joins Authentic Sports Management - MMA Combat

Eddie Alvarez Joins Authentic Sports Management - MMA Combat

Former Bellator FC lightweight champion Eddie Alvarez (22-3-0) has made the decision part ways with manager and promoter Monte Cox, and is now part of a UFC-heavy roster with Authentic Sports Management. The management firm announced the news on Tuesday, and ASM founder and president, Glenn Robinson, had the following to say regarding their newest signing.

“I come from New Jersey not too far away from where Eddie lives, and as soon as we met, it was as if I knew him for years,”
said Robinson. “He is a truly a self made man who puts family and friends at the top of his list. No matter what you ask him… his first thought is how it affects his family. I love the kid. Eddie thank you! I appreciate your trust and, as with all my guys, I won’t let you down.”

The Philidelphia Fight Factory product has long been considered one of the world's top lightweight talents and was a winner in seven-straight outings before losing his Bellator title to Michael Chandler on the 19th of November. In twenty-five professional appearances, Alvarez has been to the judge's cards only three times with nineteen stoppage victories to his name. Now at twenty-seven years of age, Alvarez had the following the say concerning his move to ASM.

“I had the opportunity to meet Glenn Robinson and everyone involved in the operation at ASM, and it was exactly what I was looking for at this point in my career. Everything is so organized. Glenn has amazing talent working for him, not just the trainers, but also all of the professionals there. I like the way he does business, he’s the same kind of guy as me, he treats everyone like family, so this is a perfect fit for me.”

Alvarez joins a growing roster of stars with Authentic Sports Management including names such as “Suga” Rashad Evans, Kenny Florian, Matt Mitrione, Miguel Torres, Jake Shields, Anthony “Rumble” Johnson, Melvin Guillard, Jorge Santiago, Gesias “JZ” Cavalcante, and Claude Patrick among others.

Bellator Fighting Championships, Making the Move to Friday - MMA Combat

Bellator Fighting Championships, Making the Move to Friday - MMA Combat

Beginning with the kick-off of its sixth season, March 2, 2012, Bellator Fighting Championships will make a permanent move to Friday nights in an effort to capture a greater number of viewers who have often been forced to choose between industry-leader, The Ultimate Fighting Championship, and its smaller competitor when conflicting shows are scheduled.

Bellator CEO Bjorn Rebney had the following comment regarding their latest announcement:

“Our focus was to find the right night, where the largest number of MMA fans could enjoy the show. We’ve been discussing this move with our partners at Viacom for months. When we looked at the alternatives, we agreed that Fridays provided a great night for us to reach MMA fans with our live, real sport, tournament events every week.”

The move will not entirely eliminate programming conflicts with the UFC, as the new format for The Ultimate Fighter is scheduled to air on FX TV, Fridays, in 2012; but the decision should alleviate some of those concerns as TUF runs for merely an hour in duration.

Bellator's Season 6 will air live on MTV2 and Epix (HD) as is traditionally the case; however, the promotion is expected to make a full transition to Spike TV come 2013.

Leben Suspended 1-Year for Failed Drug Screen - MMA Combat

Leben Suspended 1-Year for Failed Drug Screen - MMA Combat

UFC officials announced Monday that middleweight contender Chris "The Crippler" Leben (22-8-0) has been handed a one-year suspension by parent company Zuffa LLC, after a failed post-fight drug screen at UFC 138, an event he headlined on November 5.

Leben's sample came back positive for banned substances oxycodone and oxymorphone, while the remaining nineteen competitors on the card passed their tests. UFC president Dana White made the following comment on the issue.

“I like Chris and I want him to do well, but based on his actions, he’s been suspended for one year. If he needs professional help, we are going to be there for him. We want to see him succeed not only in the Octagon, but in his personal life.”

"The Crippler" who coaches and represents Icon Fitness MMA in Oahu, Hawaii, posted three consecutive wins in 2010, defeating Jay Silva, Aaron Simpson, and Yoshihiro Akiyama respectively, but saw his momentum halted when he ran into Brian Stann on New Year's day. In July, the Portland, Oregon, native bounced back with a knockout victory over Wanderlei Silva, but Mark Munoz was not to be denied at UFC 138 where he stopped Leben with deep lacerations (TKO doctor stoppage).

The thirty-one year old veteran commented on the suspension Monday:

“I would like to make it known that I fully accept this suspension and apologize for embarrassing the UFC, my friends and family, and [the] sport of mixed martial arts. I’m learning that I’m my own worst enemy sometimes. I can’t succeed in the Octagon or in life behaving this way. I’ve got to make some real changes over the next year, and I’m going to focus on getting my life and career back on track.”

Rampage Meets Bader at UFC 144, Saitama, Japan - MMA Combat

Rampage Meets Bader at UFC 144, Saitama, Japan - MMA Combat

Zuffa CEO, Lorenzo Fertitta, revealed Thursday that former light heavyweight champion Quinton "Rampage" Jackson (32-9-0) would get his wish to fight on the UFC's upcoming card in Japan, where he will meet TUF Season 8 winner, Ryan "Darth" Bader (13-2-0).

UFC 144 will take place February 26, 2012, at the Saitama Super Arena in Saitama, Japan, and will feature a lightweight title showdown between defending champion Frankie "The Answer" Edgar, and #1 contender, Benson "Smooth" Henderson.

A veteran of the now defunct PRIDE Fighting Championships, "Rampage" competed under the popular Japanese promotion from 2001-2006, amassing a record of 12-5 while gaining widespread popularity among Japanese fans for his aggressive style inside the ring. The native of Memphis, Tennessee, who now represents Wolfslair Academy owns fourteen wins by way of [T]KO and most recently headlined UFC 135 where he was defeated by light heavyweight king Jon "Bones" Jones, in the fourth round by Rear-Naked Choke. Lobbying hard for a placement at the event when it was announced this fall, Jackson will get his opportunity to entertain those at the Saitama Super Arena once more.

12-0 to begin his professional career, Bader appeared to be on the fast-track to a title shot until he ran into Jon "Bones" Jones in February of this year; submitting to a Guillotine Choke against the eventual champ, the Power MMA representative was then caught in the same manuever against UFC legend Tito Ortiz in what many dubbed a 'passing of the guard' match, in July. UFC 139 however, saw Bader return to his winning ways when he found the knockout blow against Jason Brilz just a minute and seventeen seconds into their contest. Looking to regain the thunder that was taken from him, "Darth" will get another opportunity against one of the division's elite in Jackson.

Freire Reflects on Season Four Loss, Looks Ahead to Pellegrino - MMA Combat

Freire Reflects on Season Four Loss, Looks Ahead to Pellegrino - MMA Combat

Twenty-five year old Team Nogueira standout, and one half of Bellator's "Pitbull" brothers, Patricky Freire (9-2-0) has blossomed into one of the lightweight division's brightest young stars. The Season Four Tournament finalist possesses some of the sharpest boxing at 155lbs and is well-versed in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, but saw himself fall short to tournament winner and eventual promotion champion Michael Chandler, when he failed to stop the NCAA wrestler's greatest asset, his takedowns.

Now shifting his attention to UFC veteran Kurt Pellegrino - who he will meet this Saturday at Bellator 59 at the Caesars Hotel & Casino in Atlantic City, New Jersey - Freire hopes to put on display the improvements made to his overall game.

“The two biggest lessons I learned in my fight with Michael Chandler were that I needed to improve my takedown defense and my conditioning... Fighting another wrestler has definitely made me focus more energy on my takedown defense leading into this fight; who knows, maybe he’s underestimating me a little and thinks he’ll take me down like Chandler did or make me gas. If that’s what he’s thinking, he will be very surprised. I’m not the same. I’ve worked hard to improve all aspects of my game, especially my flaws. I’m better at everything compared to last time I fought.”

Training alongside some of the most influential Brazilian veterans in the sport's young history, Freire needn't look far to find examples of the kind of competitor he strives to become. With a dependent young family back home in Brazil, motivation has never been higher for the title-hopeful.

“If I feel pain and I’m suffering while I’m training, I look at the guys who train more than me and have gone through tougher situations than I did. The biggest examples are "Minotauro," "Minotoro" and Anderson Silva. I admire other fighters, but these are the ones I try to mirror the most.”

UFC Files Lawsuit Against New York Attorney General - MMA Combat

UFC Files Lawsuit Against New York Attorney General - MMA Combat

The Wall Street Journal's on-line portal has reported that Zuffa LLC - who owns the Ultimate Fighting Championship - has filed a lawsuit against New York attorney general Eric Schneiderman and Manhattan district attorney Cyrus Vance Jr. in hopes of receiving a declaration that the State's ban on mixed martial arts violates the first amendment and the company's freedom of expression.

As well, a number of mixed martial arts fighters are said to have joined the company in it's pursuit of damages, including UFC light heavyweight champion Jon "Bones" Jones, Gina Carano, UFC lightweight champion Frankie "The Answer" Edgar, Matt Hamill, and Brian Stann.

“Live professional MMA is clearly intended and understood as public entertainment and, as such, is expressive activity protected by the First Amendment,” the lawsuit said.

Representing the plantiffs, New York University School of Law professor Barry Friedman added the following:

“It’s martial artistry. The nature of martial arts is a lot like dancing.”

The promotion recently kicked off it's broadcasting partnership with FOX cable network, a deal signed for seven years in duration, ushering the brand into mainstream, prime-time television in an effort to support its continued thirst for growth and audience captivation.

Despite wide-spread support from interest groups and venues such as Madison Square Garden within the state, New York has upheld their ban on the sport which was written into law roughly fifteen years ago. The lawsuit goes on to argue that if the ban's intent is to curb a message of violence, the widespread availability of mixed martial arts programming on television defeats that purpose as New Yorkers can watch the sport from home.

“As is true of ballet, music, or theater, for an audience, attending a live MMA event is an experience that cannot be replicated on a screen.”

Okami vs. Boetsch, Pettis vs. Lauzon Added to UFC 144 - MMA Combat

Okami vs. Boetsch, Pettis vs. Lauzon Added to UFC 144 - MMA Combat

UFC officials Tuesday, announced a pair of high-profile fights that have been added to the UFC 144 - Edgar vs. Henderson line-up. In the first, power-house middleweight Tim "The Barbarian" Boetsch (14-4-0) will meet one-time title challenger Yushin "Thunder" Okami (26-6-0) on the Japanese Judoka's home turf, at the Saitama Super Arena in Saitama, Japan; while lightweights Anthony "Showtime" Pettis (14-2-0) and Joe "J-Lau" Lauzon (21-6-0) will do battle in a pivotal contest at 155lbs, February 26, 2012.

Dropping down to middleweight in 2011, Boetsch has enjoyed a size and strength advantage that had been missing at light heavyweight; in May, at UFC 130 - Rampage vs. Hamill, "The Barbarian" beat-up TUF Season Three winner Kendall Grove en route to a unanimous decision, announcing his arrival at 185lsb. Most recently, the AMC Pankration representative toppled the previously undefeated Nick Ring over fifteen minutes at UFC 135 - Jones vs. Rampage.

"Thunder" has been the most successful Japanese import in UFC history, posting a 10-3-0 record under the banner since his introduction in 2006, with three win-streaks of three fights or better along the way. His elusive title shot finally came this past August at UFC 134 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, but division king Anderson "The Spider" Silva proved once again why he is widely considered the world's best pound for pound fighter when he stopped Okami for only the second time in his career on second round strikes.

Former WEC lightweight champion, "Showtime" Pettis, had a disappointing start to his UFC tenure when the RoufuSport product was outpointed by Clay Guida at The Ultimate Fighter 13 Finale in June of this year. Pettis however, would bounce back strong with a narrow split decision win over tough veteran Jeremy Stephens at UFC 136 - Edgar vs. Maynard III, in October. The highly-touted twenty-four year old has never been finished in sixteen professional appearances, and has stopped eleven opponents inside the distance.

Joe Lauzon stunned the red-hot Melvin Guillard at UFC 136 when the Massachusetts native notched the seventeenth submission victory of his career with a first round Rear-Naked Choke after staggering "The Young Assassin" with a straight left on their feet. 8-3-0 inside the octagon, Lauzon has never lost back-to-back fights and has been to decision only once in twenty-seven professional appearances.

The updated UFC 144 card is below:

UFC Lightweight Championship
Frankie Edgar (No. 1 LW, No. 4 PFP) vs. Ben Henderson (No. 6 LW)

Yoshihiro Akiyama vs. Jake Shields (No. 5 WW, No. 10 PFP)
Tim Boetsch vs. Yushin Okami (No. 3 MW)
Anthony Pettis vs. Joe Lauzon

UFC Announces Trio of Fights for 2012 - MMA Combat

UFC officials announced Monday a trio of fights scheduled to take place in early 2012.

Yoshihiro Akiyama (13-4-0) will make his welterweight debut at UFC 144, February 26, in Saitama, Japan, where the Japanese Judoka will battle one-time UFC title challenger Jake Shields (26-6-1). "Sexyama" began his UFC stint with a tough split-decision win over the highly regarded Alan Belcher, but has since lost three consecutive bouts at 185lbs to Chris Leben, Michael Bisping, and Vitor Belfort respectively, prompting the move to welterweight...

Henderson Earns #1 Contender Spot, Gets Edgar in February - MMA Combat

With a big victory this past weekend at UFC On FOX 1 - Velasquez vs. dos Santos, Benson Henderson continued to roll, defeating Clay Guida by unanimous decision over three hard rounds of action; Saturday, UFC president Dana White announced that the MMA Lab product is now the division's #1 contender and will square off with champion Frankie Edgar in the promotion's return to Japan, February 26, 2012, at the Saitama Super Arena in Saitama, Japan.

“Both [Henderson and Edgar] are exciting fighters. After Frankie’s [knockout of Gray Maynard], I was texting him for four days, like a groupie. I was so blown away by his performance,” said White. “Every time [Henderson] fights, it’s exciting, so them being the main event in Japan should be a great show.”

Henderson (15-2-0) has won three consecutive bouts - all inside the UFC - since losing his WEC lightweight championship to Anthony Pettis in December of 2010. The Arizona-based fighter is a winner in thirteen of his previous fourteen appearances and has been stopped only once in seventeen professional outings.

Speaking about his performance Saturday, Henderson had the following to say:

“I wanted to be more technical and precise [tonight]. Clay did a great job of making it more of a brawl and a wrestling match. As far as matching up with Frankie, I have to do a better job at sticking to the game plan. Frankie and I are going to put on a great show.”

The champion, Edgar (14-1-1), last appeared at UFC 136 where he battled Team Couture standout Gray Maynard in the main-event. Edgar put their trilogy of bouts to rest with a shocking fourth round knockout of the wrestling ace to retain his lightweight title. "The Answer" has successfully defended his place atop the division three times since capturing the belt in April of 2010 with a unanimous decision victory over B.J Penn.

Golden Glory's Attorney Responds to Overeem Suit - MMA Combat

Golden Glory's Attorney Responds to Overeem Suit - MMA Combat

Representing Holland-based fight team Golden Glory, and affiliated management firm Knockout Investments, the law offices of Roderick J. Lindbolm Thursday released an official statement on behalf of their clients, in response to the pending law-suit Alistair Overeem filed against his former team on Wednesday of this week for undisclosed damages.

“KOI and Golden Glory are respected organizations committed to securing the best fight deals and training for their team of fighters. Mr. Overeem's continued suggestions to the contrary are scurrilous and will be vigorously defended in the proper forum.

The former Strikeforce heavyweight champion and 2010 K-1 World Grand Prix champion split with Golden Glory on September 20, 2011, citing unresolvable differences between the parties.

“As with any relationship, there are good times and bad times -- you have your common ground and your differences,” Overeem wrote. “As with any relationship, you have trust. When differences lead to a breach of trust, there’s no turning back and no way to continue a positive, working relationship.”

"The Demolition Man" (35-11-0) has captured thirty-three of thirty-five career wins by way of stoppage. The thirty-one year old striker has not been defeated in mixed martial arts competition since September of 2007, when he was knocked out by Russian standout Sergei Kharitonov, and today possesses some of the most highly regarded kickboxing in the heavyweight division.

“Alistair Overeem is a striker -- he wants to throw the first punch. But this misguided decision to file a lawsuit as a preemptive strike leaves Mr. Overeem vulnerable in ways our clients wished to avoid” added Lindbolm.

Lesnar Will Serve as Analyst at UFC on Fox 1 - MMA Combat

UFC president Dana White announced Wednesday during the UFC on FOX 1 media conference that the analyst's table will include none other than former UFC heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar who will give his input on the action as the fight between champion Cain Velasquez and challenger Junior dos Santos unfolds.

“This is focused on the heavyweights and the heavyweight championship fight on Saturday night between Cain Velasquez and Junior dos Santos,” said White. “We're going to be talking about Alistair Overeem and Brock Lesnar. Overeem will be there, and Brock Lesnar is actually going to be one of the analysts on the show, breaking down the fight. He [defended the title] against Cain Velasquez, and he was supposed to fight Junior dos Santos, so his opinion is interesting.”

Etim is a winner in five of his previous six octagon appearances.

Undefeated Brazilian slugger Edson Barboza [25], fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, is 3-0 in his UFC career, capturing wins over Mike Lullo, Anthony Njokuani and Ross Pearson respectively. Aldo vs. Mendes at UFC 142, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil - MMA Combat

Aldo vs. Mendes at UFC 142, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil - MMA Combat

UFC president Dana White revealed Monday in an interview with FoxSports that featherweight champion, Jose Aldo Jr. (20-1-0) will defend his title next in his home country of Brazil when the feared striker collides with undefeated wrestling stand-out, Chad "Money" Mendes (11-0-0). Little is known about UFC 142, which will take place January 14, 2012, but it is expected to land back in Rio de Janeiro at the HSBC Arena, the same venue that hosted UFC 134 in August of this year.

"Pound-for-pound superstar Jose Aldo will return home to fight in Brazil for the first time since 2007 when he defends his UFC featherweight title against unbeaten powerhouse Chad Mendes," UFC president Dana White told FOXSports.com. "Aldo hasn’t lost in over five years, but Mendes has yet to lose in MMA, and after clearing out all the contenders put in his way, he believes he has what it takes to beat the champion."

Representing Team Alpha Male, Mendes (26) was set to challenge Aldo at UFC 133 this past August, but after an injury sidelined the champion, "Money" elected to remain on the card and battle replacement Rani Yahya, deferring his title opportunity. Mendes picked up his fourth consecutive decision win at the event and his second in as many fights inside the octagon. The Hanford, California, native has won seven of his eleven professional bouts on the judge's scorecards.

Nova Uniao's Jose "Scarface" Aldo (25) by contrast has finished fourteen of twenty-one career opponents with twelve of those victories coming by [T]KO. The once-defeated Brazilian Jiu Jitsu black-belt from Manaus, Amazonas, Brazil, possesses some of the most dynamic stand-up in the sport today and has compiled thirteen consecutive wins dating back to 2005. He most recently defended his title at UFC 136 on October 8, 2011, where he defeated three-time title challenger, Kenny "Kenflo" Florian via unanimous decision.

Diaz vs. Cerrone Official for UFC 141 - MMA Combat

Diaz vs. Cerrone Official for UFC 141 - MMA Combat

A stacked UFC 141 card, which will take place Saturday, December 30, 2011, at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, will include a pivotal fight at 155lbs between division front-runners Nate Diaz and Donald "Cowboy" Cerrone. UFC officials confirmed Monday that verbal agreements were in place for the bout.

Diaz (14-7-0) made his return to the lightweight ranks at UFC 135, where he handily defeated Japanese star Takanori Gomi via first round submission (armbar). The bout followed an up and down run at 170lbs that saw the Cesar Gracie black-belt post a 2-2 record with wins over Rory Markham and Marcus Davis before dropping consecutive decisions to Dong Hyun Kim and Rory MacDonald respectively. In twenty-one professional fight Diaz has been stopped only once inside the distance with ten submission wins on record, but has dropped six of seven bouts that have gone to decision. Mixing in an effective blend of boxing and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Diaz is without question one of the division's best finshers.

A WEC cross-over, "Cowboy" Donald Cerrone (17-3-0) has terrorized the UFC lightweight ranks since being introduced to the promotion in 2011. 4-0 since his debut against Paul Kelly at UFC 126, Cerrone has finished three of four opponents inside the octagon and looks to make it seven straight wins this December. Representing Jackson's MMA, two of "Cowboy's" three career losses have come at the hands of Ben "Smooth" Henderson under the WEC banner. Cerrone owns thirteen wins by way of submission and brings technical Muay Thai skills coupled with an aggressive Jiu Jitsu attack to the table.

Confirmed bouts for UFC 141 are below:

Matchups:
Brock Lesnar (No. 5 HW) vs. Alistair Overeem (No. 3 HW)
Jon Fitch (No. 2 WW, No. 5 PFP) vs. Johny Hendricks (No. 10 WW)
Jake Ellenberger vs. Diego Sanchez
Nate Diaz vs. Donald Cerrone
Manny Gamburyan vs. Diego Nunes
Sean Pierson vs. Dong Hyun Kim
Junior Assuncao vs. Ross Pearson

MMA Combat - Oliveira Decides on Move to Featherweight

MMA Combat - Oliveira Decides on Move to Featherweight

Twenty-two year old Brazilian talent Charles "do Bronx" Oliveira (14-2-0) will be on the move to the UFC's featherweight division according to the fighter's manager, Wade Hampel, who spoke with MMA Junkie today.

"Charles hopes to return to action before the end of the year, if possible," Hampel said. "We're extremely excited to see what he can achieve at 145 pounds."

Hampel maintains that one day his client will fight considerably heavier, perhaps as high as 185lbs, but at just twenty-two and still growing, is said to have no problems cutting the additional weight after a test run proved successful.

"do Bronx" has been to decision only once in sixteen professional bouts with six [T]KOs and seven submissions on record. After suffering the first loss of his career to Jim Miller at UFC 124, Oliveira had a win against Nik Lentz over-turned to a 'no contest' when a commission review determined an illegal knee played a major factor in the fight's result. Oliveira last competed at UFC Live 5 where he was stopped on strikes by the red hot Donald Cerrone.
