Muhammed "King" Lawal Released by Strikeforce - MMA Combat

Muhammed "King" Lawal Released by Strikeforce - MMA Combat

Former Strikeforce light heavyweight champion Muhammed "King Mo" Lawal was released by the promotion on Tuesday following comments the fighter made via twitter about a member of the Nevada State Athletic Commission.

“I honestly feel like Lundvall was a racist bitch [for] asking me if I can read or speak English,” Lawal wrote. “Go on somewhere with that bulls--t, bitch!”

Lawal posted his comments in the aftermath of a hearing held earlier that day concerning a drug test the wrestling standout failed when he defeated Lorenz Larkin this past January 7, at Strikeforce - Rockhold vs. Jardine. Lawal went on to defend his position, stating the reason he took particular offense to the questions asked by Pat Lundvall.

"Its funny how people are tryna say that I'm callin the commission racist. No!! They aren't. But there was one person on the panel that was out of line with the question she asked me. I found it insulting, prejudice, and a lil racist. I say racist from my past experiences, I have been asked that in the past as an insult."

The American Kickboxing Academy product went 3-1 inside Strikeforce, losing only to Brazilian talent Rafael Cavalcante by third round TKO in his first title defense after defeating Gegard Mousasi to capture promotion gold in 2010. Six of Lawal's eight career wins have come by [T]KO and five of those inside the first round.

Gracie Signs with Black House, Decides on Move to Middleweight - MMA Combat

Friday, March 16, 2012, Strikeforce talent Roger Gracie has reportedly signed on with Black House MMA and according to manager Ed Soares, has decided on a move down to middleweight following his most recent outing when he was defeated for the first time in his professional MMA career by former 205lb champion Muhammed "King" Lawal at Strikeforce - Barnett vs. Kharitonov.

At 4-1, the 6'4" grappling ace boasts some of the very best Brazilian Jiu Jitsu in the sport today with all four of his victories on record coming by way of submission.

The former ADCC and IBJJF World Champion, who makes his home in London, England, will add some much needed depth to the 185lb class which has for some time been sparse of top-contenders. Moreover, the move - should the weight cut prove successful - teases with the possibility of carrying over a fierce grappling rivalry into the Strikeforce cage as former division champ Ronaldo "Jacare" Souza makes his home among the middleweight elite.

Bellator 67 Gets Chandler vs. Gono Headliner - MMA Combat

Bellator 67 Gets Chandler vs. Gono Headliner - MMA Combat

Bellator FC officials announced Wednesday that lightweight champion Michael Chandler will make his first appearance since capturing promotion gold against Eddie Alvarez when he takes on Japanese veteran Akihiro Gono in a non-title affair at Bellator 67, May 4, 2011, at Casino Rama in Rama, Ontario.

The bout will headline the card, which will mark the promotion's fourth visit to Ontario, Canada, and third to Casino Rama just outside of Orillia, Ontario, about an hour and half North of Toronto. The event will air live on MTV2 (The Score in Canada), and will also include a welterweight scrap between Canadian talent Ryan Ford and Brazilian veteran, Luis Santos.

Xtreme Couture representative, Michael Chandler, is a perfect 9-0 since August of 2009 when he began his professional MMA career. Now 6-0 inside the Bellator cage, Chandler won the Season 4 Lightweight Tournament to become the division's #1 contender, before defeating the highly regarded Eddie Alvarez to win the 155lb title, submitting the Philadelphia native in the fourth round of their memorable contest at Bellator 58. Chandler will look to keep that momentum going when he goes toe-to-toe with Gono, a 56-fight veteran boasting a resume decorated with world-class opposition.

Akihiro Gono most recently appeared at Deep - 57 Impact where he lost a unanimous decision to Daisuke Nakamura. Now fighting in his natural weight-class of 155lbs, Gono formerly competed against light-heavyweights, middleweights, and welterweights under the Pancrase, PRIDE, and UFC banners and has been stopped only eight times in his professional career, which began in April of 1994. Since 2006, Gono holds notable wins over Hector Lombard, Gegard Mousasi, Yuki Kondo, and Hayato Sakurai.

Thiago Silva Replaces Nogueira in UFC on Fuel TV 2 Headliner - MMA Combat

Thiago Silva Replaces Nogueira in UFC on Fuel TV 2 Headliner - MMA Combat

UFC officials announced Tuesday that Antonio Rogerio Nogueira has suffered a knee injury while training and will be forced to withdraw from his scheduled UFC on Fuel TV 2 headliner against Alexander Gustafsson. It did not take long for the promotion to find a replacement however, as fellow Brazilian Thiago Silva has stepped into Nogueira's place to fill the void. The event will mark the UFC's first trip to Swedish soil as they'll go live from the Ericsson Globe Arena in Stockholm, April 14, 2012.

Silva (14-2-0) has finished eleven bouts by [T]KO in his professional career and his posted a 5-2-1 record inside the octagon since 2007. His most recent appearance left a black-mark on the American Top Team product's resume, as the uber-aggressive light heavyweight beat down Brandon Vera over three rounds at UFC 125 - Resolution, January 1, 2011, before having his urine sample test positive for a banned substance, resutling in a fine and a twelve month suspension from commission officials.

A highly technical Gustafsson (13-1-0) utilizes a slightly different approach inside the cage, relying on crisp combinations with his above average boxing to break down his opposition from the outside. Equally efficient in finishing fights, "The Mauler" has stopped twelve opponents inside the distance with nine [T]KOs on record and most recently defeated Vladimir Matyushenko via first round TKO at UFC 141 - Lesnar vs. Overeem this past December.

The updated UFC on Fuel TV 2 card is below:

Dustin Poirier vs. Chan Sung Jung Added to UFC on Fuel 3 - MMA Combat

UFC officials revealed Thursday, March 1, that a previously announced bout between Dustin "The Diamond" Poirer (12-1-0) and Chan Sung Jung aka "The Korean Zombie" (12-3-0) will take place Tuesday, May 15, as a five round main-event for UFC on Fuel 3. The winner of the contest will earn the #1 contender spot in the featherweight division and the right to face reigning champion, Jose Aldo Jr., likely in the summer of 2012.

Dustin Poirier, who makes his camp at Gladiators Training Academy, has finished ten of thirteen career opponents to-date inside the distance with five of those wins coming by way of knockout and another five by submission. Now 4-0 inside the octagon, Poirier last appeared at UFC 143 - Diaz vs. Condit where he submitted Max Holloway in the first round via arm-bar. The lone loss on the Louisiana native's record came in August of 2010 when he was edged by Danny Castillo in a close decision.

"The Korean Zombie" has become a fan favorite inside the promotion with his caution-to-the-wind style that has seen him finish ten career opponents as well. Jung owns seven victories by way of submission and has posted consecutive wins since making his UFC debut against Leonard Garcia in March of last year. He most recently appeared at UFC 140 - Jones vs. Machida, where he upset one-time title challenger Mark Hominick, TKOing the Canadian stand up specialist just seven seconds into the fight.

The fight will likely round out the card, which is updated below:

Edgar Pushes for Rematch With Henderson - MMA Combat

Edgar Pushes for Rematch With Henderson - MMA Combat

Former UFC lightweight champion Frankie Edgar will not go quietly into the night, or down to 145lbs in this case as is encouraged by so many influences around him, fans and UFC brass alike.

Jose Aldo, a dominate and marketable champion in his own right, finds himself reigning over a division not unlike that of the middleweights (at times over the years); one without a clear #1 contender to the King's throne, a fight that would be compelling for the fans. Edgar would put people in the seats, and the bout could potentially become the most anticipated featherweight contest in the sport's history.

But Edgar wants to make that move on his terms, and in "The Answer's" mind, he's still the rightful owner of the promotion gold he lost not one week ago. Normally soft-spoken, Edgar intended to have his message heard while on The MMA Hour with Ariel Helwani, and he made it clear he has no intentions of making the drop to featherweight at this time.

"I'm saying it, and I'm saying it loud: I want my rematch," Edgar said on MMAFighting's MMA Hour. "I'm not going to have these antics or play these games. I'm telling you want I want. This is what I want. I think it's fair. I think the fans want to see it. It was fight of the night.... "I think the rematch makes sense on several levels," he said. "Not only can the UFC be good guys, I think I earned it. Economically, they’ve been investing money in me. I've been at the helm of this weight class for two years now. I think it just makes sense for them and obviously for me. Let’s do it."

Edgar naturally has echoed the thoughts of many who took the fight in that night, including myself and UFC president Dana White; feeling that he should have walked away with the decision in Saitama, Japan, or at very least, a draw. Tasting defeat for only the second time in his professional career, and the first time in nearly four years, it's tough to tell the fiery competitor that he doesn't belong in the division or his career would be better served elsewhere. At this point, the man has earned the right to determine his own direction and whether he gets the rematch he's calling for or not, he's not going anywhere anytime soon.

"I’m staying at 155," he said. "This is where I’m at right now. I still feel like I got a run left. I still want that title back."
