Our footnotes for the month series is back as we look to recap the July 2011 that was across the sport of mixed martial arts. Once again, feel free to contribute any of your own memorable moments, as I am sure to miss several and look forward to reading your contributions; without further hesitation we present Footnotes for July in the World of MMA.
  • Melvin Guillard continues to roll at UFC 132, knocking out another top lightweight in Shane Roller in just over 2 minutes.
  • Wanderlei Silva's long awaited return to the octagon lasted all of 27 seconds, as Chris Leben connected with a series of short upper-cuts that put "The Axe Murderer" out cold, UFC 132.
  • A resurgent Tito Ortiz puts a breath of life back into his career after defeating top-ten Ryan Bader via first round Guillotine Choke at UFC 132.
  • UFC 132 headliners Dominick Cruz and Urijah Faber battle to a five-round decision with the champion Cruz getting his redemption and evening the score at one-a-piece, taking the bout on all judges cards.
  • Chael Sonnen gets an assignment after serving his indefinite suspension handed down by the CSAC. Sonnen will battle Brian Stann at UFC 136 this fall.
  • Top featherweight Hatsu Hioki draws George Roop for his UFC debut, which is scheduled for UFC 137, October 29, in Las Vegas, Nevada.
  • Andre Winner and John Howard get released by the UFC.
  • A number of fighters call out former UFC middleweight Nate Marquardt as his suspension is lifted by the PSAC. Notably, Paul Daley, Hector Lombard, Ben Askren, among others.
  • B.J Penn vs. Carlos Condit is made official for UFC 137 later this fall.
  • Phil Davis injures his knee and is replaced by Tito Ortiz in the UFC 133 main-event versus Rashad Evans; UFC president Dana White has choice words for Lyoto Machida's camp after the Brazilian supposedly took the fight, only to demand more money later.
  • Mirko CroCop will get one last kick at the can when it's announced he'll face Roy Nelson later this fall at UFC 137.
  • Antonio Rogerio Nogueira injures himself during training and is forced to withdraw from his UFC 133 bout against Rich Franklin; Franklin is scratched from the card.
  • Hideo Tokoro becomes the 2011 Japan Bantamweight Grand Prix winner at DREAM - Fight for Japan, defeating Masakazu Imanari in the finals. Both Gegard Mousasi and Hiroyuki Takaya defend their respective promotion titles.
  • Korean, Myung Ho Bae defeats New Zealand's Rodney MacSwain to become the Legend FC champion.
  • Alistair Overeem exits the Strikeforce Heavyweight Grand Prix and is replaced by Daniel Cormier who now faces Antonio Silva in the semi-finals.
  • Chris Leben and Mark Munoz are announced as UFC 138's main-event.
  • Cub Swanson becomes the first Zuffa fighter to cash in on the accident-insurance coverage, maxing out his annual limit at $50 000 after a training accident left him with multiple facial fractures.
  • Dominick Cruz and Demetrious Johnson are made official for UFC Live 6.
  • Former champions Urijah Faber and Brian Bowles will collide at UFC 139.
  • Pat Curran and Marlon Sandro advance to the finals of the Bellator Summer Series Featherweight Tournament, defeating England's Ronnie Mann, and BJJ Black-belt Nazareno Malegarie respectively. Chris Horodecki defeated Chris Saunders in his Bellator debut.
  • DREAM makes DREAM 17 official, Shinya Aoki will defend his lightweight title against former WEC king Rob McCullough; DREAM also announces they will change their format to three, five-minute rounds.
  • Alistair Overeem's coach Martijn De Jong announces his fighter will participate in a United Glory event this October, a Netherlands-based promotion with a scheduled show in Russia.
  • Lightweight champion, Eddie Alvarez, and 2011 LW Tournament winner, Michael Chandler, are scheduled for Bellator 54.
  • Marloes Coenen is submitted for the first time in her career when Miesha Tate taps her with an arm-triangle choke, claiming the Strikeforce 135lbs title.
