MMA Combat - Zhang vs. Elkins, Poirier vs. Garza Official

MMA Combat - Zhang vs. Elkins, Poirier vs. Garza Official

Thursday, August 18, the UFC made official two bouts; the first pitting Chinese national Tiequan Zhang (13-1-0) against Darren Elkins (12-2-0) in a featherweight contest at UFC 136, the second will see Dustin Poirier (10-1-0) lock horns with Pablo Garza (11-1-0) at UFC on FOX 1, also to be contested at 145lbs.

UFC 136 is scheduled for October 8, 2011, and will take place in Houston, Texas. The card will be headlined by Gray Maynard and lightweight champion Frankie Edgar as they look to settle the score with the third installment of this fierce rivalry. "The Mongolian Wolf" Zhang representing China Top Team is the only Chinese athlete on the UFC's roster and got back in the win column in his promotion debut when he defeated Jason Reinhardt by Guillotine Choke at 48 seconds of round 1, UFC 127 - Penn vs. Fitch. Elkins also picked up a victory in his most recent outing, defeating Japanese talent Michihiro Omigawa by unanimous decision at UFC 131 - dos Santos vs. Carwin this past June. The wrestler holds other notable wins over Duane Ludwig, Gideon Ray, and Pat Curran and holds a record of 2-1 inside the octagon.

UFC on Fox 1 is expected to air Nov 12, and will take place in Anaheim, California. At present, Garza vs. Poirier is the only confirmed bout for the event as it was announced only hours after the promotion made official its new television deal with FOX. Poirier has rattled off three consecutive wins after suffering his first career defeat to Danny Castillo at WEC 50. A late replacement for an injured Jose Aldo at UFC 125, Poirier made his promotion debut January 1, dismantling #1 contender Josh Grispi over three rounds; most recently, the Louisiana native took a unanimous decision over Jason Young improving his record to 2-0 inside the octagon. Once defeated Pablo Garza is also 2-0 under the UFC banner, picking up back-to-back wins after getting submitted by Tiequan Zhang at WEC 51. In his last appearance at UFC 129 in Toronto, Canada, Garza brought the crown to their feet with a slick flying triangle choke win over the tough Yves Jabouin.

MMA Combat - UFC 136 Adds Pettis vs. Stephens

MMA Combat - UFC 136 Adds Pettis vs. Stephens

The UFC announced Saturday the addition of a lightweight bout to their growing UFC 136 lineup; former WEC 155lbs champion Anthony "Showtime" Pettis (13-2-0) will collide with heavy-hitter Jeremy "Lil' Heathen" Stephens (20-6-0) at the event, which also includes Gray Maynard vs. Frankie Edgar III for the lightweight championship, and Kenny Florian vs. Jose Aldo for the 145lbs title.

Roufusport product, Anthony Pettis, was a winner in four consecutive outings heading into his highly anticipated promotion debut June 4, at The Ultimate Fighter 13 Finale. Promised a title-shot, the conclusion of Maynard vs. Edgar II saw Pettis' opportunity pushed back further into the year with a pending rematch on the horizon between the two. "Showtime" elected to take a fight against surging lightweight contender Clay Guida rather than stay dormant, and was upset over three rounds of action as "The Carpenter's" wrestling chops and furious pace proved the difference once again. Pettis will look to pick up his first UFC victory when he tows-the-line against 12-time UFC veteran Stephens this fall.

"Lil' Heathen" is riding a two-fight winning streak coming into the contest, most recently defeating Daniel Downes by unanimous decision at The Ultimate Fighter 13 Finale, June 4. Stephens has won 14 fights in his professional career by way of [T]KO, and is appreciated for his exciting style inside the octagon. The Iowa native is 7-5 in his UFC tenure with notable wins over Cole Miller, Rafael dos Anjos, and Sam Stout.

UFC 136 is scheduled to take place October 8, 2011, at the Toyota Center in Houston, Texas.

MMA Combat - Maynard vs. Edgar III, Florian vs. Aldo Added to UFC 136

MMA Combat - Maynard vs. Edgar III, Florian vs. Aldo Added to UFC 136

The UFC announced Friday the addition of two title fights to their UFC 136 lineup, scheduled for October 8, 2011, at the Toyota Center in Houston, Texas. First it was decided that Gray Maynard (10-0-1) and Frankie Edgar (13-1-1) would settle the score in the third installment of their highly competitive rivalry at the event; then shortly after, news broke that Jose Aldo Jr. (19-1-0) would defend his featherweight belt against two-time lightweight title challenger, Kenny Florian (14-5-0).

155lbs champion Frankie Edgar, has met challenger Gray Maynard twice before without salvaging a victory against the powerful D-1 wrestler. Maynard remains the only man to defeat the defending lightweight champ who boasts an effective mix of pace, boxing, and wrestling talent. With his ever evolving game, most consider "The Bully" to be Edgar's biggest threat as the Xtreme Couture representative possesses a similar skill-set to that of the champ, but brings his size and strength advantage into the contest. The heart of the champion could never be questioned however, as the Renzo Gracie product overcame a dire situation the last time both men appeared at UFC 125, as Maynard dropped Edgar on numerous occasions in the first round, effectively punching himself out of energy, before "The Answer" mounted an unlikely comeback to capture a unanimous draw on the judge's scorecards. Be sure to catch the conclusion of this thrilling trilogy this coming fall.

Featherweight king Jose Aldo Jr. has been nothing short of brilliant in his tenure with Zuffa. The former WEC lightweight champion, and current UFC title holder has perhaps the most dangerous stand-up attack in the sport today with 12 [T]KOs in 19 career wins, and 12 consecutive victories on record. At UFC 136 he will face a man who has been there before, but came up short in each of his title opportunities to-date. Florian, not unlike the previously discussed bout, possesses a skill-set, akin to the champion's own; his Muay Thai is more than adequate against the majority opponents put in front of him, and his Jiu Jitsu is among the division's best; but could that be the X-factor in this upcoming challenge? It's unlikely he'll get the better of the standing action, and his wrestling has done him few favors throughout his career. A surprise to some, Jose Aldo's wrestling was effective against an unsuspecting Mark Hominick in April... Florian will have his work cut-out for him.

MMA Combat - Demian Maia vs. Jorge Santiago at UFC 136

MMA Combat - Demian Maia vs. Jorge Santiago at UFC 136

Although the promotion is yet to confirm the news, multiple outlets have reported that Brazilian talents Jorge Santiago (23-9-0) and Demian Maia (14-3-0) will meet at UFC 136, October 8, 2011, at the Toyota Center in Houston, Texas. Both middleweights are coming off recent losses and will look to stay relevant at the top of the 185lbs division this fall.

Maia last appeared at UFC 131 - dos Santos vs. Carwin in Vancouver, Canada, where the highly decorated Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Black-belt fought Mark Munoz for three hard rounds, but could not gain the upper hand on the judge's scorecards, losing a unanimous decision despite a strong first round. Maia is 8-3 since joining the UFC in 2007.

Departing from the UFC in 2006, Santiago went 11-1 fighting mostly in Japan, until earlier this year when the 9-year veteran of the sport re-signed stateside as a top-ten ranked middleweight. Making his second debut with promotion on May 28, at UFC 130, Santiago took on Brian Stann, but was [T]KO'd by "The All-American" with a flurry of punches in the second round. With 32 professional fights on his resume, Santiago hopes to recapture some of the thunder accompanied by his signing with an impressive performance against the one-time title challenger, Maia.

Other confirmed bouts for the event include:

Chael Sonnen vs. Brian Stann
Dave Herman vs. Mike Russow
Demian Maia vs. Jorge Santiago
Josh Grispi vs. Matt Grice
