Alves Brimming With Confidence Ahead of UFC on FX 2 - MMA Combat

Saturday, March 3, 2012, the Ultimate Fighting Championship will go live from Allphones Arena in Sydney, Australia, for UFC on FX 2 - Alves vs. Kampmann, featuring a welterweight contest between two of the division's best striking talents, Thiago "Pitbull" Alves and Martin "The Hitman" Kampmann.

One-time title challenger Thiago Alves has not put together a winning streak since 2008, but despite mixed results inside the octagon, a refocused "Pitbull" is brimming with confidence ahead of his main-event slot Saturday afternoon (Friday night in North America).

“The Thiago Alves that fought GSP was not prepared to fight at that level at all," said Alves on MMAWeekly radio. "I beat all the guys, I earned the title shot, not like most of the people that fought for the title that fought one guy. I actually cleaned out the welterweight division except (Jon) Fitch. But for that fight I didn’t prepare myself well, mentally I wasn’t prepared for that kind of pressure. The magnitude of the show."

Since that bout, the American Top Team product has gone 2-2 dropping unanimous decisions to Jon Fitch and Rick Story while defeating John Howard and most recently Papy Abedi at UFC 138 - Leben vs. Munoz in November of last year. With his weight now under control - credited to the direction provided by Mike Dolce - Alves is more capable of concentrating on his performance leading up to fight night.

Speaking about his re-commitment to the sport he loves, and what he plans on doing this weekend, Alves had the following to say:

“Being a fighter, it just doesn’t stop the clock. It’s 24/7. It’s the way you carry yourself throughout the world, throughout life while in this business, and I learned that. I’m a fighter 24/7 and I’m loving every second.”

“It doesn’t matter where the fight goes. It’s going to be my fight. I’m very concerned with what I’m going to do to him. I’m going to try to break him whether it’s in the stand-up or on the ground. I have all the respect in the world for Martin Kampmann and his camp, but I truly believe that I’m going to break him, it doesn’t matter where the fight goes.”

Noons Expects Another 'Fight of the Night' Performance - MMA Combat

Saturday, March 3, 2012, Strikeforce will go live from the Nationwide Arena in Columbus, Ohio, for Strikeforce - Tate vs. Rousey, featuring a women's 135lb title tilt between champion Miesha Tate and #1 contender, Ronda "Rowdy" Rousey.

The co-main event showcases two of the promotion's top lightweight talents in K.J. Noons and former champion Josh Thomson; during a media conference call leading up to this weekend's card, which will air live on SHOWTIME, Noons was confident as always in his ability to please the crowd.

“I don’t really have to say too much. My fight is always ‘Fight of the Night,’ and K.J. Noons is definitely stealing the show. Look at my track record... I’m really excited to be fighting somebody like Josh Thomson; it’s gonna be a barnburner. I’m training as hard as I’ve ever trained, so I’m ready.”

Noons (11-4-0), who recently posted back-to-back losses for the first time in his career to Nick Diaz and Jorge Masvidal respectively, rebounded in December with a solid decision victory over Billy Evangelista at Strikeforce - Melendez vs. Masvidal. With eight TKOs on record, the boxing prowess of Noons cannot be denied, but despite having his last three bouts go to the judge's cards the Californian has received heaps of praise for his efforts inside the cage.

“It’s something that’s in your blood,” he said. “I’ve had almost 45 pro fights in boxing, kickboxing and MMA, and every single fight I’ve had has always been ‘Fight of the Night.’ I have a true passion for fighting and it’s going to be exciting.”

Building a Brand: Bellator Fighting Championships

http://www.mmacombat.com/blogs/blog17803-building-brand-bellator-fighting-championships.html

As Bellator Fighting Championships prepares to kick-off its sixth season, which will begin Friday, March 9, 2012, with Bellator 60 - Warran vs. Curran, I find myself counting down the days until the weekly production resumes, until it returns to Ontario soil, until the fighters take the stage for season six.

The UFC set the blueprint, identifying that talent is an organization's biggest asset and marketing tool. When you build a brand out of fighters and retain those athletes, they in turn become synonymous with the promotion's brand and the two give each other a better shot at growing together.

Bellator FC has succeeded in accomplishing just that; it's a modest accomplishment when compared to the marketing machine that is the Ultimate Fighting Championship, but for a company who put on its first show in April of 2009, considerable leaps have been made in a relatively short period of time.

With Viacom's recent purchase of a majority stake, and the experience that comes with promoting a brand like the UFC throughout their most crucial years of development, the sky is the limit for Bjorn Rebney's vision.

Today, I find myself looking forward to Friday night fights because of consistently strong productions with top-tier competitors like Pat Curran, Eddie Alvarez, Cole Konrad, Ben Askren, Hector Lombard, Zack Makovsky, Douglas Lima, Michael Chandler, Marlon Sandro and the Pitbull Brothers, just to scratch the surface. These fighters have proven they're among the very best on the planet, and have etched their way into the memories of hardcore fans because of thrilling performances week in and week out.

In early 2011, Rebney revealed the company was operating cash-flow even for the first time in its short history; a nice milestone achieved by few in a difficult and competitive business. With new partnerships in place, a few years from now Bellator's CEO could be singing an even sweeter tune.

NSAC Suspends Diaz, Hardy vs. Ludwig Booked for UFC 146 - MMA Combat

NSAC Suspends Diaz, Hardy vs. Ludwig Booked for UFC 146 - MMA Combat

Former Strikeforce welterweight champion and recent UFC interim title challenger, Nick Diaz, has had a temporary suspension placed on his fighter license by the Nevada State Athletic Commission after the commission addressed his positive sample from UFC 143.

Diaz battled Carlos Condit over five rounds in the evening's main-event, but a sample taken in routine commission testing turned up a positive result for Marijuana, a drug Diaz has a medical license for in the state of California however, failed to take the steps to get an exemption leading up to the fight. The result marks the second time Diaz has tested positive for the substance, the first, taking place in 2007 when he had his victory over Takanori Gomi over-turned to a no-contest.

Diaz is required to be present for a formal hearing, during which time both incidents will be discussed and he will be permitted to appeal the decision. Keith Kizer, NSAC executive director, has made the following comment regarding Diaz's situation when speaking with MMAJunkie:

"In the past, the norm for a positive test for marijuana is six months, but we have had two repeat offenders, and they both got a 12-month suspension. But that doesn't necessarily mean that's what will happen here."

Hardy vs. Ludwig, Gonzaga vs. Del Rosario at UFC 146

The UFC has also added two fights to their upcoming UFC 146 - Dos Santos vs. Overeem card, which is scheduled to take place May 26, 2012, at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.

In the first, welterweight strikers Duane "Bang" Ludwig and Dan "The Outlaw" Hardy will come to blows in a bout that could be a do-or-die showing for both men. Ludwig is 2-3 since returning to the octagon in January of 2010, and most recently was submitted by fellow veteran Josh Neer in the first round at UFC on FX - Guillard vs. Miller. After winning his first four fights under the UFC banner, Hardy has fallen on hard times himself dropping his next four to the likes of Georges St. Pierre, Carlos Condit, Anthony Johnson, and Chris Lytle respectively. "The Outlaw" requested some extended time away, but is now prepared to right the ship this coming May.

The second announced bout will feature a pair of heavyweights in Gabriel Gonzaga and Shane Del Rosario. Gonzaga made his return to the promotion in January of this year when he defeated Ednaldo Oliveira in the first round by Rear Naked Choke at UFC 142 - Aldo vs. Mendes. A veteran of Strikeforce, where he posted a 3-0 record, Del Rosario will be making his UFC debut when he steps into the cage against the seasoned grappler Gonzaga. In his most recent outing, the undefeated California-based slugger defeated Lavar Johnson by arm-bar at 4:31 of the first round.

The updated UFC 146 - Dos Santos vs. Overeem card is below:
UFC Heavyweight Championship
Junior Dos Santos vs. Alistair Overeem

Edson Barboza vs. Evan Dunham
Dan Hardy vs. Duane "Bang" Ludwig
Diego Brandao vs. Darren Elkins
C.B. Dollaway vs. Jason "Mayhem" Miller
Shane Del Rosario vs. Gabriel Gonzaga
Kyle Kingsbury vs. Glover Teixeira
Paul Sass vs. Jacob Volkmann

Alvarez vs. Aoki Expected for Bellator 66 - MMA Combat

Alvarez vs. Aoki Expected for Bellator 66 - MMA Combat

Bellator Fighting Championships is expected to add a blockbuster main-event to its Bellator 66 line-up as top lightweight talents Eddie Alvarez (22-3-0) and Shinya Aoki (30-5-0) have reportedly come to a verbal agreement to meet on the April 20 card.

The bout would bring to fruition a highly anticipated rematch as the two competitors first met in December of 2008, when the Japanese grappling ace latched onto a fight-ending heel hook, halting the contest just a minute and a half into the first round.

After the defeat, Alvarez would go on to capture seven straight wins while becoming the first ever Bellator lightweight champion, a title he only recently relinquished when he was defeated by Michael Chandler November 19, 2011, in a bout that would go down as one of the year's best.

In his twenty-two career victories to-date, only three have come by way of decision as Alvarez has solidified himself as one of the sport's most adept finishers and will look to get back to his winning ways this coming spring.

"Tobikan Judan" Shinya Aoki has himself put together a seven-fight winning streak after getting decisioned by Strikeforce lightweight champion, Gilbert Melendez in April of 2010. Five of those seven wins came by way of submission, bringing his total to eighteen at just twenty-eight years of age.

The DREAM lightweight champion most recently appeared December 31, 2011, when he defeated Satoru Kitaoka by unanimous decision at Dream - Fight for Japan: Genki Desu Ka! New Year! 2011.

Simpson and Sanchez Consider a Greater Weight Cut - MMA Combat

Simpson and Sanchez Consider a Greater Weight Cut - MMA Combat

Tough losses often bring about tough decisions, and few fighters in the UFC today will not attempt to dabble outside of the weight class they were originally signed into. Whether the decision is brought about as a result of an energy-sucking weight cut, or the feeling of being overpowered by a larger opponent, it's a reality eventually faced by many, avoided by few in a sport with a fraction of the divisions offered in other combat arts such as boxing.

UFC veterans Aaron Simpson and Diego Sanchez are the latest to consider a move; down in each case, but this isn't new territory for the one-time title challenger Sanchez, who competed for but ultimately came up short in a bid for the lightweight strap in 2009.

Commenting on his fight this past week, Simpson had the following to say:

"I've been thinking about it over the last year and a half,"
Simpson told MMAjunkie.com. "Everybody I fight is cutting from 220 [pounds]."

"There were times I couldn't budge. [Markes] had his shoulder buried in my chest, and I couldn't move him. And I can defend a lot of people's takedowns and everything, and it was just one of those deals where that really dwarfed me."

While Simpson seems firm on the decision, Sanchez stopped short of declaring a switch. “That’s up in the air,” Sanchez told fiveouncesofpain.com when asked about competing at 155 pounds. “I’m gonna take the fights that propel me to the biggest stage.” With a welterweight division stacked full of big wrestlers such as Ellenberger, Story, Hendricks, Fitch, Koscheck, and Georges St. Pierre (to name a few), the move for the TUF Season 1 winner appears imminent.

In a sport where the margin between fighters is becoming more narrow by the day, athletes are seeking every advantage they can get. Not all competitors feel comfortable with a substantial weight cut, but those who are capable of the feat, particularly in a three round battle, will reap the benefits of their size. When you're a fighter without an ideal class for your frame, tough decisions for re-invention are inevitable.
