MMA Combat - Oliveira Decides on Move to Featherweight

MMA Combat - Oliveira Decides on Move to Featherweight

Twenty-two year old Brazilian talent Charles "do Bronx" Oliveira (14-2-0) will be on the move to the UFC's featherweight division according to the fighter's manager, Wade Hampel, who spoke with MMA Junkie today.

"Charles hopes to return to action before the end of the year, if possible," Hampel said. "We're extremely excited to see what he can achieve at 145 pounds."

Hampel maintains that one day his client will fight considerably heavier, perhaps as high as 185lbs, but at just twenty-two and still growing, is said to have no problems cutting the additional weight after a test run proved successful.

"do Bronx" has been to decision only once in sixteen professional bouts with six [T]KOs and seven submissions on record. After suffering the first loss of his career to Jim Miller at UFC 124, Oliveira had a win against Nik Lentz over-turned to a 'no contest' when a commission review determined an illegal knee played a major factor in the fight's result. Oliveira last competed at UFC Live 5 where he was stopped on strikes by the red hot Donald Cerrone.

Fighting out of Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, Canada, Grant (17-5-0) has finished thirteen opponents by way of submission and has only been stopped once inside the distance in twenty-two professional bouts. Representing Fit Plus, Grant most recently appeared at UFC Live 6 - Cruz vs. Johnson where he walked away with a submission victory (armbar) over wrestling standout Shane Roller..

Minnesota Martial Arts Academy product Jacob Volkmann (13-2-0) has also been stopped inside the distance only once in his career to-date. A strong wrestler with an effective submission attack, Volkmann has posted a 4-2 record inside the octagon, winning four consecutive bouts by decision since March of last year. He most recently competed at UFC Live 5 - Hardy vs. Lytle where he easily controlled Danny Castillo over three rounds en route to a unanimous decision win.

MMA Combat - Ivanov Out of Bellator 56 Semi-Final, Grove Steps in Against Santos

MMA Combat - Ivanov Out of Bellator 56 Semi-Final, Grove Steps in Against Santos

Undefeated Bulgarian Sambo-stylist Blagoi Ivanov (5-0-0) has withdrawn from the Bellator Season 5 Heavyweight Tournament semi-finals as a result of an undisclosed injury.

Replacing Ivanov on October 29, at Bellator 56 will be veteran South African Neil Grove (11-4-1) who was eliminated in the quarter-final round of the Season 5 tournament after three grueling rounds of action with Mike "300" Hayes who was awarded the split decision victory after fifteen minutes.

Grove will now lock horns with tournament alternate Thiago "Big Monter" Santos (9-1-0) at Memorial Hall in Kansas City, Kansas. Santos was scheduled to compete in the tournament's opening round but visa issues forced the Brazilian veteran from the bracket; he later went on the defeat Josh Burns at Bellator 53 in a necessary tournament-reserve bout after Hayes suffered a fractured orbital bone in his win over Grove, rendering him medically suspended.

Grove is 3-2 inside the Bellator cage with each of his victories coming by first round TKO. In fact, all eleven of "Goliath's" wins have been TKO stoppages.

Once defeated "Big Monter" began his career rattling off six straight wins until he ran into Bellator veteran Alexey Olenik in November of 2009. Since that submission defeat, the native of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, has added three more victories to his record including a submission stoppage in his Bellator debut on October 8.

The other side of the bracket will see heavy-hitters Eric Prindle (8-1-0) and Ron Sparks (8-0-0) do battle as both men look to advance to the tournament final later this year.

MMA Combat - UFC 137 Main-Card Adds Jacoby vs. Tavares

With news breaking that UFC welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre has been forced to withdraw from his scheduled UFC 137 main-event bout against #1 contender Carlos Condit (details HERE), the vacant spot created on the evening's main-card will go to TUF Season 11 participant Brad Tavares and undefeated college football convert, Dustin Jacoby.

Tavares (7-1-0) began his professional career with a seven fight win-streak that saw the Hawaiian pick up six stoppages along the way. The 23-year old Xtreme Couture representative suffered his first defeat at UFC 132 - Cruz vs. Faber II when he dropped a unanimous decision to wrestling ace, Aaron Simpson.

Jacoby (6-0-0) began his mixed martial arts career less than twelve months ago, but has racked up six consecutive wins since that time with five [T]KOs; he most recently appeared September 4, at Annihilation Productions - Riverfists 2011 where he TKO'd Billy Horne at just thirty-seven seconds of round 1.

UFC 137 will be headlined by two-time UFC champion B.J. Penn and former Strikeforce welterweight champion Nick Diaz in a pivotal contender bout at 170lbs. The Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, Nevada will play host to the event which is scheduled for October 29, 2011.

MMA Combat - Escudero vs. Avila at Bellator 55

MMA Combat - Escudero vs. Avila at Bellator 55

This Saturday's Bellator 55 card has made an addition to its preliminary line-up - which will air live on Spike.com - as TUF Season 8 winner Efrain Escudero (17-3-0) battles "Dirty Boy" Cesar Avila (6-1-0) at 155lbs.

Representing MMA Lab, Escudero has finished better than half [11] of his opponents by way of submission. A solid wrestler out of Tempe, Arizona, Escudero went 3-2 under the UFC banner and has posted a 4-1 record since his promotion release in fall of last year. He most recently defeated Mike Rio via unanimous decision at CFA - 2 in July of this year.

Team United's Cesar Avila has stopped five of seven opponents in his young career. The 22-year old most recently defeated Luis Magana via Triangle Choke at WCF - 5, March 12, 2011, and has won in consecutive outings since losing for the first time against Joe Gustina in July of 2010.

Saturday, October 22, 2011, Bellator Fighting Championships will go live from the Cocopah Casino Resort in Yuma, Arizona, for Bellator 55, featuring the semi-final pairings for the Season 5 Bantamweight Tournament. In the co-main event, powerhouse Cuban wrestler Alexis Vila will go toe-to-toe with Nova Uniao product Marcos Galvao, while the red-hot Ed "Wild" West will battle another highly touted Nova Uniao representative in Eduardo Dantas in the evening's main-event. The winner of the Season 5 tournament will become the division's #1 contender, and earn a shot at Zach Makovsky's title in 2012.

MMA Combat - Bellator 54: Preview and Middleweight Tournament Predictions

MMA Combat - Bellator 54: Preview and Middleweight Tournament Predictions

Saturday, October 15, 2011, Bellator Fighting Championships will make its return to the Boardwalk Hall Ballroom in Atlantic City, New Jersey, for Bellator 54, featuring the semi-final pairings for the Season 5 Bellator Middleweight Tournament.

The co-main event will see Russian striker Alexander Shlemenko (41-7-0) go toe-to-toe with American Brian Rogers (8-2-0), while California's Bryan Baker (16-2-0) takes on Wand Fight Team representative Vitor Vianna (11-1-1) in evening's main-event. The winner of the Season 5 tournament will become the #1 contender at 185lbs and earn a shot at the promotion's title in 2012.

Alexander Schlemenko vs. Brian Rogers
Season 2 Middleweight Tournament winner Alexander Schlemenko representing RusFighters Sport Club boasts a diverse array of standing attacks that have seen the Omsk, Russia, native compile twenty-five victories by way of [T]KO. He is a winner of four straight bouts and ten of his previous eleven, losing only to promotion champion Hector Lombard in that stretch. In forty-seven professional fights, Schlemenko has only been stopped three times inside the distance.

Rogers has been equally impressive of late, stringing together seven consecutive wins, all by way of [T]KO in the first round. The Independence, Ohio, native fighting out of Strong Style Fight Team has never been submitted or knocked out in his young career.

This fight will come down to experience, endurance, and who controls the grappling aspect late in the bout. Both men have proven extremely difficult to put away and Saturday will be no different as each combatant will be weary of the others ability standing. The only two times the American has been out of the first round he was defeated; expect Schlemenko to weather an early storm, swinging the fight in his favor late while pressing the pace into rounds two and three with more activity when standing en route to a unanimous decision win.

Brian Baker vs. Vitor Vianna
Brian Baker - A Season 2 Tournament finalist - has put together three consecutive wins inside the Bellator cage since he was stopped on strikes for the first time in his career against Schlemenko at Bellator 23 in June of last year. Half [8] of his wins have come by [T]KO and the Team Wildman talent entered the Season 5 tournament an early favorite to make the finals.

Fighting out of Las Vegas, Nevada, once-defeated Vitor Vianna has demonstrated a well-rounded attack with four [T]KOs, four submissions, and three decision wins on record. His lone defeat came against UFC veteran light-heavyweight Thiago Silva in November of 2006, a year in which he competed six times.

Both of these fighters like to mix-up their attacks and are comfortable where ever the action takes place - standing or on the ground - but the size advantage Baker will carry into the fight could make all the difference as they grind each other out down the stretch. Also worth noting, while Vianna has appeared four times to-date from 2007 onward, Baker began his career in '07 and has competed on eighteen occasions since. Expect Baker to impose his game and pace on Vianna as this fight wears on, winning battles in the clinch, and securing more top-control throughout the bout as he picks up a unanimous decision and books his place in the Season 5 final.

Matchups:
Bellator Middleweight Tournament Semifinals
Bryan Baker vs. Vitor Vianna
Alexander Shlemenko vs. Brian Rogers

Zach Makovsky vs. Ryan Roberts
Jacob Kirwan vs. Rene Nazare
Duane Bastress vs. Daniel Gracie
Karl Amoussou vs. Joey Kirwan
Tim Carpenter vs. Ryan Contaldi
Andria Caplan vs. Adrienne Seiber
Brian Kelleher vs. Claudio Ledesma

MMA Combat - Melendez vs. Masvidal Official, December 17

Tuesday, October 11, Strikeforce officials confirmed that 155lbs champion Gilbert Melendez will in-fact defend his promotion title, December 17, at the Valley View Casino Center in San Diego, California, when #1 contender Jorge Masvidal comes knockin' in the Californian's back-yard.

Recent weeks have given rise to speculation that Melendez would be making his awaited cross-over into the UFC ranks 'sooner rather than later' in the words of UFC president Dana White himself, but Tuesday's announcement will put those to rest at least for the time being.

Well-travelled American Top Team representative Jorge Masvidal (22-6-0) has won consecutive bouts inside the Strikeforce cage toppling Billy Evangelista and K.J Noons via unanimous decision in 2011. Nearly half [10] of Masvidal's wins have come by [T]KO.

Melendez (19-2-0) has posted five consecutive wins under the Strikeforce banner and has never been more impressive than in his last three, defeating Josh Thompson, Shinya Aoki, and Tatsuya Kawajiri respectively. While the Cesar Gracie product was tabbed by many as the logical next choice for a UFC title shot, it appears he will put his Strikeforce gold on-the-line at least once more.

Also competing on the card will be women's 145lbs champion Cristine "Cyborg" Santos in her over-due return to action as she battles once-defeated Japanese talent, Hiroko Yamanaka. Yamanaka has walked away victorious in eight-straight appearances while the Brazilian champ is undefeated in her previous ten outings.

MMA Combat - UFC 136 - Edgar vs. Maynard III, Bonuses

Saturday, October 8, 2011, the UFC went live from the Toyota Center in Houston, Texas, for UFC 136 - Edgar vs. Maynard III, featuring a lightweight title rematch between reigning champion Frankie Edgar, and #1 contender Gray Maynard.

Full results from UFC 136 - Edgar vs. Maynard III are found HERE; but when the dust settled after another wildly successful event for the promotion, four men walked away with an extra $75 000 for their efforts Saturday night.

Fight of the night honors went to a pair of great rivals in Nam Phan and Leonard Garcia who went three hard rounds toe-to-toe, with Garcia displaying his trademark resilience before mounting a late rally to nearly steal the fight. The bout saw Phan get his redemption for a split decision that went Garcia's way in their previous encounter.

Knockout of the night went to none-other than UFC lightweight champion Frankie Edgar who once again wore his heart on his sleeve in coming from behind against the bigger Maynard, winning rounds 2 and 3, before ending "The Bully's" night with an uppercut and series of hooks in the fourth. The third bout between the two combatants fulfilled every bit of the hype that preceded it, but we can now look ahead to a new list of contenders in the stacked 155lbs division.

Submission of the night went to Massachusetts native Joe Lauzon who blitzed surging contender Melvin Guillard just 47 seconds into their contest, countering "The Young Assassin" with a stunning (literally) left jab before taking his back to secure the rear-naked choke finish.

Saturday, October 8, 2011, the Ultimate Fighting Championship went from the Toyota Center in Houston, Texas, for UFC 136 - Edgar vs. Maynard III which featured a lightweight title bout between #1 contender Gray Maynard (10-0-1) and reigning lightweight champion, Frankie Edgar (13-1-1). The champion's only career loss heading into the contest came at the hands of Maynard in 2008, but "The Bully" was unable to duplicate that result on new year's day, 2011, as the two rivals battled to a five-round unanimous draw.

The Ricardo Almeida Brazilian Jiu Jitsu product was everything that makes for a great champion on Saturday, October 8, as the once beaten lightweight survived another first round drubbing to win rounds two and three and all three judge's cards before securing the victory with a devastating fourth round TKO when an upper-cut followed by a series of hooks landed flush on the jawline of the Xtreme Couture representative. The official end came at 3:54 of the fourth round, as Frankie "The Answer" Edgar retains his UFC 155lbs title.

“I hit him with a right hand. I saw he was rocked, and I just went in for the kill, man,” said Edgar. “It ain’t easy fighting somebody three times. Gray brought the best out in me, so I’ve got to thank him and his team.”

In the co-main event, Jose Aldo Jr. swept all judges cards [49-46] as the defending champion was simply the more dynamic striker over five rounds of action, while demonstrating the ability to capture dominate positions throughout the contest - although Florian showed remarkable ability to regain defensive postures. The win makes it thirteen consecutive for the Nova Uniao stand-out as he looks ahead to Team Alpha Male's Chad Mendes in 2012.

MMA Combat - Bellator 53 Preview and Main-Event Prediction

Saturday, October 8, 2011, Bellator Fighting Championships will go live from the Buffalo Run Casino in Miami, Oklahoma, for Bellator 53 featuring their Season 5 Welterweight Tournament quarter-finals; UFC veteran Ben Saunders will collide with experienced Brazilian Luis Santos in the evening's main-event, while once beaten Chris Lozano battles former MFC champ Douglas Lima in the co-main event. Each man will be looking for a birth in the tournament finals to be contested later this year, as the Season 5 winner will earn the right to challenge either Ben "Funky" Asken or Jay "The Thoroughbred" Hieron (who meet at Bellator 56) for the promotion title in 2012.

Also competing on the card is Summer Series Featherweight Tournament semi-finalist Ronnie Mann who will lock horns with fellow three-time Bellator FC veteran Kenny Foster as each man looks to make his bid for an entry in the Season 6 Featherweight Tournament to take place early 2012. Both men started 2-0 under the BFC banner, but saw their momentum stymied most recently when they were defeated by Pat Curran and Daniel Straus respectively in July and April of 2011.

Main-Event Prediction:

Ben "Killa B" Saunders has been nothing short of impressive since signing with the Bellator Fighting Championships earlier this year, handily defeating Matt Lee and Chris Cisneros inside the distance by TKO. The American Top Team representative has posted three consecutive victories and utilizes an aggressive Muay Thai attack with emphasis on a devastating Plum Clinch. Luis "Sapo" Santos is also 2-0 inside the Bellator cage, picking up his 50th career win in his last outing when he defeated tough veteran Dan Hornbuckle via unanimous decision.

Both of these fierce competitors are big welterweights with similar skill-sets to offer; while Saunders has applied his trade against some of the best competition in the world, Santos has that question mark looming over his head as the majority of his wins come against competition unknown to international audiences. Regardless, the credentials the Brazilian brings to cage are impressive as he holds the rank of black-belt in both Jiu Jitsu and Judo, while being a former national Muay Thai champion.

Saunders cannot allow Santos to dictate the pace of this bout as "Sapo" will settle into his comfort zone and preferred rhythm, making him very difficult to beat technically. The American has never looked in better shape than his recent performances suggest and should push the tempo of this contest to make Santos dig deep into his own gas tank.

It might be a rocky start for Saunders who will find difficultly in timing Sapo's attack from the outside, but he'll initiate tie-ups and clinch work along the fence, wearing on the Brazilian veteran until the second frame sees his pace slow; as Saunders does best, he'll remain relentless at that point of the fight forcing Santos to work at a rate he's unaccustomed to en route to unanimous decision or late, third round TKO stoppage. Ben Saunders will advance through to the Season 5 Welterweight Tournament Finals.

Matchups:
Bellator Welterweight Tournament Semifinals
Ben Saunders vs. Luis Santos
Chris Lozano vs. Douglas Lima

Ronnie Mann vs. Kenny Foster
Giva Santana vs. Darryl Cobb
A.J. Matthews vs. Rudy Bears
Myron Dennis vs. Raphael Davis

MMA Combat - Kim vs. Pierson Agreed for UFC 141

UFC officials announced Monday that welterweight contenders Dong Hyun Kim and Sean Pierson have verbally agreed to square off inside the octagon at UFC 141, scheduled for December 30, 2011, at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. The event will feature a heavyweight blockbuster when top-ten talents Brock Lesnar and Alistair Overeem collide in hopes of making a title bid in 2012.

Kim (14-1-1) out of South Korea is a seven-fight veteran of the octagon, posting a 5-1-1 record inside the promotion since May of 2008. "Stun Gun" is a relentless grappler with great positioning and underrated strength; he owns notable victories over Nate Diaz, Amir Sodollah, and T.J. Grant, but most recently suffered the first loss of his career when he was TKO'd by current #1 contender Carlos Condit in July of this year.

Pierson (11-5-0) made his long awaited UFC debut in December of 2010, topping Matt Riddle by unanimous decision at UFC 124. 2011 saw his six-fight winning streak snapped however, when the surging Jake Ellenberger connected with a series of punches that brought a halt to the contest at 2:42 of the first round at UFC 129 in April of this year.

UFC 129 confirmed bouts:

Matchups:
Brock Lesnar (No. 5 HW) vs. Alistair Overeem (No. 3 HW)
Jon Fitch (No. 2 WW, No. 5 PFP) vs. Johny Hendricks (No. 10 WW)
Jake Ellenberger vs. Diego Sanchez

Saturday, October 1, 2011, Bellator Fighting Championships went live from L’Auberge du Lac Casino and Resort in Lake Charles, Louisiana, for Bellator 52, featuring the quarterfinal match-ups for the Season 5 Bellator Heavyweight Tournament.

Ron Sparks representing Louisville MMA took all of 84 seconds to end Mark Holata's night, as the hulking heavyweight added yet another first round stoppage [7] to his growing resume, while advancing to the semi-final round of the Season 5 Tournament. Holata was no match for the power and precision combinations of Sparks; after a right hook put him in trouble, Sparks landed consecutive lefts that found their mark right on the jaw, spelling the end of Holata.

Eric Prindle had his hands full with Abe Wagner, but managed to take a unanimous decision after 15 minutes of intense action. Wagner was able to gain positional advantages throughout the bout, but on the feet it was all Prindle who utilized his superior striking ability to put Wagner in trouble on more than one occasion. When the dust settled, it was Prindle who advanced through to the semi-final round.

Blagoi Ivanov was impressive in his Bellator debut as the undefeated Bulgarian outclassed TUF alumnus Zak Jensen in every area of the fight, culminating with a second round Guillotine Choke stoppage after Jensen went out cold while fighting to stave off the submission.

And in the main-event of the evening, Mike "300" Hayes did just enough to take out "Goliath" Neil Grove with a split decision nod from ringside judges. The bout was a war of attrition, but Hayes continued to push forward throughout the contest while the giant South African looked to counter. Despite a third round flurry that threatened the American, it was Hayes who finished both the round and fight on top, advancing through to the tournament semi-finals.

"It was another great night in another full house at L'Auberge Casino Resort in Lake Charles,"
Bellator Chairman & CEO Bjorn Rebney said. "Our heavyweights put on some explosive performances tonight, and I can't wait for the semifinals later this month at Bellator 56 from Memorial Hall in Kansas City."
