Mousasi vs. Kyle Confirmed for Strikeforce - Tate vs. Rousey - MMA Combat

Mousasi vs. Kyle Confirmed for Strikeforce - Tate vs. Rousey - MMA Combat

Former Strikeforce light heavyweight champion Gegard Mousasi will meet American Kickboxing Academy product, Mike Kyle, in the co-main event at Strikeforce - Tate vs. Rousey, March 3, 2012, in Columbus, Ohio; Kyle 'tweeted' news of the bout Monday and will look to stifle the Armenian's momentum as Mousasi has gone undefeated in his previous five outings since losing his title via unanimous decision to Muhammed "King" Lawal in April of 2010.

Mousasi (32-3-2) most recently appeared December 17, 2011, at Strikeforce - Melendez vs. Masvidal where he out-pointed rising star Ovince St. Preux over three rounds of grinding action. The Holland-based striker has finished twenty-eight of his thirty-seven career opponents inside the distance with eighteen [T]KOs on record. "The Dreamcatcher" himself has not been stopped since August of 2006 when he was submitted by Akihiro Gono.

Kyle (19-8-1) is admired for his aggressive, hard-hitting style that has seen him pick up twelve [T]KOs in nineteen career wins. "MAK" was undefeated in six consecutive appearances from December 2009 through November 2010 until he was TKO'd by Antonio Silva one month later in his seventh bout in twelve months. Most recently, Kyle defeated Marcos Rogerio de Lima at Strikeforce - Barnett vs. Kharitonov in September of 2011.

Strikeforce - Tate vs. Rousey will go live from Nationwide Arena in Columbus, Ohio, and feature a women's welterweight title scrap between budding rivals Ronda Rousey and promotion champion Meisha Tate. Also competing on the main-card will be Paul Daley when he battles Kazuo Misaki, while former lightweight king Josh Thomson will lock horns with K.J. Noons.

Risk vs. Reward: Chris "The All-American" Weidman - MMA Combat

Risk vs. Reward: Chris "The All-American" Weidman - MMA Combat

When Chris "The All-American" Weidman (7-0-0) got the call to fill in for Michael Bisping and fight former title contender Demian Maia on short notice at UFC on Fox 2, it was an offer and opportunity the NCAA D1 All-American wrestler could not refuse.

"I didn't want to lose the opportunity," Weidman told MMA Fighting on Wednesday. "You only live once. I have an opportunity to gain a lot of recognition and get myself up to where I want to be. So it was like, I'll do it tomorrow if I had to. Some people never get that opportunity, so who am I to waste it?"

Representing Serra-Longo Fight Team, Weidman has honed his already considerable grappling skills, transforming himself into one of the sport's most promising rising stars.

The opportunity however, is not without its share of risk as well; Maia has developed his game over time and the Brazilian Jiu Jitsu world champion is not the one-dimensional fighter he once was when he first entered mixed martial arts. The strongest part of his game remains his submission grappling which poses some interesting questions Weidman will have to ask of himself, particularly, whether or not he wants this fight to be contested on the ground?

The strongest weapon in Weidman's arsenal is his wrestling, but the twenty-seven year old New Yorker has grown in leaps and bounds with respect to his Jiu Jitsu skill-set. Will we see the rangy middleweight opt for a standing approach? Only time will tell, but the American remains nothing but confident, regardless of where the fight goes.

"I'm not worried at all," he said. "I have a lot of respect for his jiu-jitsu, but if we go to the ground, I'm confident and excited to prove where I'm at with my jiu-jitsu. He's going to have a lot to worry about, too. If we go to the floor, I'm looking for submissions just like it's anybody else. I'm not the guy who's going to be starstruck. I believe in myself and I think I can go in there and submit him."

Has Chris Weidman bit off more than he can chew with an assignment that marks a great step up in competition - on short notice nonetheless - or will we see the birth of a new top-contender at 185lbs?

Warren vs. Curran, March 9 at Bellator 61 - MMA Combat

Warren vs. Curran, March 9 at Bellator 61 - MMA Combat

Friday, March 9, 2012, two-time Bellator tournament winner Pat Curran (16-4-0) will get his shot at featherweight champion Joe Warren (7-2-0) as per promotion CEO Bjorn Rebney who confirmed the news with the Chicago Tribune this week.

The bout will likely headline Bellator 61 which will emanate from The Venue at Horseshoe Casino in Hammond, Indiana.

Team Nogueira standout Patricio Freire (17-1-0) was next in line for Warren after capturing the Season 4 Featherweight Tournament, but a broken hand suffered during training saw his shot given to Summer Series Tournament winner Pat Curran who introduced himself to the 145lb ranks in 2011.

Curran has amassed a record of 6-1 inside the Bellator cage with two separate winning streaks of three fights. First, he won the 2010 Bellator Lightweight Tournament to earn a shot against then-champion Eddie Alvarez, but fell short over five hard fought rounds against the larger, more experienced division front-runner.

He then announced that he would drop down a weight class to participate in the 2011 Summer Series Featherweight Tournament; Curran racked up victories against Luis Palomino, Ronnie Mann, and Marlon Sandro from June until August to become the first two-tournament winner in promotion history.

Joe Warren, already a tournament winner himself and the current 145lb king tried to accomplish a similar feat when he entered the Season 5 Bantamweight Tournament bracket. Unfortunately for the Team Quest product, his mission to hold two belts at once was halted almost as quickly as it began when he ran into the heavy hands of fellow wrestling ace Alexis Vila, who left Warren unconscious in their quarterfinal match-up with a thudding left hand that found its mark flush on the American's jaw.

Munoz Injured; Sonnen vs. Bisping, Maia vs. Weidman, January 28 - MMA Combat

Munoz Injured; Sonnen vs. Bisping, Maia vs. Weidman, January 28 - MMA Combat

UFC president Dana White announced via twitter on Tuesday that top middleweight talent Mark Munoz has been forced to withdraw from his bout with former title-contender Chael Sonnen at UFC on FOX II, scheduled to take place January 28, 2012, at the United Center in Chicago, Illinois.

An elbow injury has been cited as the reason for Munoz's withdrawal, and with that, the face of the event has undergone a considerable shuffle; one that has seen opportunities lost on one hand, but significantly gained in two others.

Stepping into the vacant co-main event slot will be the streaking Michael Bisping (22-3-0), who has won in four consecutive outings dating back to May of 2010. Bisping last appeared December 3, 2011, at the Ultimate Fighter 14 Finale where he handily beat up Jason "Mayhem" Miller over three rounds, finishing the bout late in the third via TKO. The winner between Sonnen and Bisping will determine the division's next #1 contender as per promotion president Dana White.

Bisping's promotion left Brazilian Jiu Jitsu specialist and former #1 contender Demian Maia without an opponent of his own, but after fellow Brazilian Rousimar Palhares turned down the fight on short notice, undefeated top-prospect Chris Weidman answered the call.

The Serra-Longo Fight Team representative last appeared at UFC 139 - Shogun vs. Hendo, where he submitted Tom Lawlor just 2:07 seconds into the first round. The win was Weidman's third under the UFC banner and the New York native is touted as being among the very best young grapplers at 185lbs.

The updated card is found below:

"King" Lawal Tests Positive for Drostanolone - MMA Combat

"King" Lawal Tests Positive for Drostanolone - MMA Combat

Tuesday, January 17, 2012, the Nevada State Athletic Commission revealed that former Strikeforce light heavyweight champion Muhammed "King" Lawal (9-1-0) has tested positive for banned substance, drostanolone, from a drug-test administered at the promotion's recent event, Strikeforce - Rockhold vs. Jardine which took place January 7, 2012.

Lawal ran through the formerly undefeated (and still may be, pending the commission's decision to overturn the result to a 'no contest') Lorenz Larkin (12-1-0) at the event; utilizing his superior size, strength, and wrestling en route to a second round TKO.

Larkin's team released the following statement on the result:

“It is disappointing to hear of this news since this is now the second opponent in a row that has tested positive after fighting me. I respect Mo and wish him the best. If he says that he didn’t take anything then I will take his word for it and it’s up to him and his team to prove otherwise. At this point, it’s up to the Nevada State Athletic Commission how they will deal with this situation.”

Keith Kizer, NSAC Executive Director, was reached by Sherdog.com on Tuesday for comment, and kept it brief:

“The matter has been referred to the Attorney General’s office for issuance of a complaint for disciplinary action,”

Lawal tasted defeat for the first time in his career when he lost his Strikeforce title to Brazilian talent Rafael Cavalcante via third round TKO in August of 2010. Determined to recapture his place atop the division, Lawal blitzed grappling ace Roger Gracie in September of 2011, knocking him out with heavy punches at 4:33 of the first round; Larkin would have been consecutive victories for the American Kickboxing Academy standout, but it's uncertain where this positive result will leave him in the immediate future.

"I'm very surprised about this. I am very careful about what I put into my body,"
Lawal said Tuesday. "I've never tested positive for a performance-enhancing drug. I've gone through, and still welcome, Olympic-style testing."

"I will do whatever is necessary to get to the bottom of this."

"I'm not a cheater. I might cheat at video games, but I never cheat at fighting."

Gustafsson Meets Nogueira in Stockholm, UFC on Fuel II - MMA Combat

Gustafsson Meets Nogueira in Stockholm, UFC on Fuel II - MMA Combat

UFC officials announced Tuesday the scheduled main-event for UFC on Fuel II, which will take place April 15, 2012, at the Ericsson Globe Arena in Stockholm, Sweden.

Appeasing the home-crowd, as the promotion often does, rising star Alexander Gustafsson (13-1-0) will put his boxing prowess to the test against veteran top-ten talent, Antonio Rogerio Nogueira (20-5-0) who had been lobbying for a striking-based opponent in recent weeks.

Just twenty-four years of age, "The Mauler" has finished nine career opponents by [T]KO and is a winner in four straight outings, each culminating with a stoppage; the Stockholm native most recently appeared December 30, 2011, at UFC 141 - Lesnar vs. Overeem where he knocked out veteran contender Vladimir Matyushenko just 2:13 into round one.

"Minotoro" Nogueira has been a mainstay among the light heavyweight elites since his tenure with PRIDE Fighting Championships; the thirty-five year old Brazilian Jiu Jitsu black-belt boasts Pam Am level boxing ability with a powerful left hand that has ended several bouts. 3-2 inside the octagon, Lil Nog requested a striker as his next assignment after facing four consecutive grappling-based opponents. He most recently appeared at UFC 140 - Jones vs. Machida where he TKO'd Tito Ortiz at 3:15 of round one.

Reports are this bout was made official only after top-contender Dan Henderson turned down the rematch with Nogueira.
